Win XP Pro on a Asus dual Athlon 1800 with 1GB RAM.

It's hittin' my hard drive just sitting there.

It's quiet, then every minute or two, it makes a little "bzzzzzt" noise cuz it's hittin the hard drive.

What is it doing and how can I get it to stop? This thing may have already killed a new 40GB IBM deskstar. It's on trial for that senseless death now.

Anyway, I suspect some kind of automatic something, but I think I've turned off most of the automatic features.

I don't need auto-backup or auto-anything that I'm aware of.

tips?

If you're drive died from that little bit of use it's a good thing, cause it would have went sooner or later anyway.

its probably swapping out to VM, which is normal for windows regardless of how much ram you have... you can run a "diskperf -N" to turn off the performance counters and it may help you alittle.

And I agree with Nothinman, the drive woulda died sooner or later, the extra strain of VM shouldn't affect the life of the drive.
