Thanks !

I know this goes against the question, but seriously buy as much memory as you can afford (even if you just add 128meg). The difference on this config will be huge.

I agree. There not much else you can do, other than install some more RAM. Another 128MB will make a huge difference.

no matter what you do with 128MB of RAM xp will hurt to use....

The way XP looks uses RAM....disable all the nice graphical touches.....

Go into MScongfig and make sure that nothing is starting with windows.....i.e no virus checker/firewall etc etc......

Whilst running make sure (via task manager) that there are no non-windows processes running.....

By the time you have done all this you would be as well downgrading to win 2k or even windows 98!!!

Yeah I took out the 128MB chip and stuck in a 256 MB the difference was big, whould there be any differnce from 256MB to 386MB ? or not really ?

XP is a memory whore, the more you throw at her, the better she runs. I think the breaking point (diminishing returns) is around the 1 Gig mark. I have 768 in one machine, 1.5 G in another, and there isn't too great of a difference, until I get a ton of stuff open. I also avoid opening 300 meg tcpdump files on one though.

Yes, but it won't be as dramatic. The step from 128 to 256 is the biggest jump and the one with the most obvious 'wow thats better' factor. More memory upto 512 (IMHO) continues to make the system feel 'smoother'. More than that makes sense if you use applications which really use that kind of memory up (not hard today with photo/video editing or games).

Yeah, it's time to get it while it's still cheap. I remember buying my 1GB sticks of Corsair Value Select for ~80 at newegg; now it's 101 bucks and that's on sale!

Aside from that, I find that anything over 256 will help. I had 256 on my laptop and simply having firefox open was hard enough. As soon as I opened up a pdf for school, boom, game over. I was in swapfile land.

More memory is good.

Disabling shadows under menus, the dragable translucent selection box, and animation of minimize/maximize speeds general usage up too. Though on a 2.4ghz, thats not a big deal.

The key here is RAM. 128 is not enough to run smoothly.

- disable the fancy GUI crap (make it look like Win2k)
- turn off system restore (sucks anyways)
- stop file indexing
- disable all unnecessary system services (and I mean ALL...)

Do not turn off system restore, we generally recommend you leave it on unless your very comfortable fixing the OS yourself.

I concur wholeheartedly.

256MB is about the minimum you need though, 128MB is not enough. If you streamline XP enough it will still take 80-90MB of ram just to run the desktop, throw in an antivirus and you are at 110MB or more.

Two things I'd reccomend.. Right click on your harddrives in "my computer" and choose properties. At the bottom of the first page, you'll see a check box for indexing. Second, I'd suggest going into Services.mmc and disabling the indexing service.

Also, in Explorer right click on My Computer, click on Properties, click on Advanced tab, click on Settings under Peformance and select Adjust for best performance. That will speed you up a bit and give you the classic look instead of the default XP gui that looks like it was designed by fisher-price.

Nobody's mentioned how to disable services, so here's a guide (the black viper one):
http://www.dead-eye.net/WinXP%20Services.htm

agreed on the "performance settings" in windows, but I recommend you do keep the setting checked that allows the desktop icon text background to be transparent. it just looks bad w/o it if you have a nice wallpaper

here's a good one (requires knowledge of regedit):
"Speed up menu display"
# HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
# Select MenuShowDelay from the list on the right.
# Right on it and select Modify.
# Change the value to 0 (or 200 or 300, etc)
# Reboot your computer.

If you have an intel chipset, maybe try intel application accelerator:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/index.htm
I loaded it onto my system maybe a couple months ago b/c of problems with the DMA settings of my hard drive (which it fixed), and also it speeds up boot time. Intel claims it will speed up other apps too, I can't confirm or deny. But my dvd/cd burning is much better now as the previous ms drivers stuck me in PIO land and I couldn't get out in spite of reg hacks which might only temporarily fix the problem

And like everyone says, memory is cheap. My system has 256mb, and today i picked up a stick of 64 MB (168 pin pc 133 cl3 sdram) at a store just to confirm that it would work on my board. The price? 5 damn dollars. I've still got another slot open so next time I'll get the same brand at 256 MB and boost me up to 576MB, or maybe even more.

I don't recommend disabling any of the default services. The performance gain won't be anything substantial and if you actually do need to disable services to gain performance you definitely don't have enough RAM.

Also not to mention you could run into a lot of problems from disabling services.
