XP Pro CDrom problem!? HELP!

I just installed XP Pro on a buddys computer and am having a weird problem. During the setup process, it prompts to insert the XP CD so it can copy files. The cd has been in there the whole time though, and the only way i got it to install was to copy the I386 files to the hard drive. At the prompt it gives you option to browse and i noticed that the cd rom didnt even show up in my computer. After I finished the install, both cd drives arent showing up in my computer or device manager. I have already tried moving the drives around on different cables but it makes no difference. He is using an a7v w/ tbird800. Maybe it needs a bios update? any known issues or solutions? If i dont fix it he said hes gonna beat me up.
