XP Pro 32bit / NTFS / Maxiumum non-boot partition size

Intel Matrix Storage Manager RAID 5 on an ASUS P5Q MoBo with 6 1TB SATA II Drives.

Plan to install XP Pro 32 bit on a single boot drive that's not part of the RAID 5.

I want to know if XP will allow me to partition and format the 5TB accessible RAID drive. I need XP Pro 32bit to support an application that only runs on that platform.

This machine is primarily a scanning and storage server. I have been able to install XP on a Microsoft Virtual Machine installed on a Vista Ultimate 64bit machine, and my application works that way, but I would like to avoid that route if I can so I don't need to buy another copy of Vista.

The Microsoft site says a GPT drive can be up to 256TB but it doesn't say whether that's under XP 64 or XP 32. My app only runs on XP 32.

Any help greatly appreciated.

My understanding is the XP32 doesn't support GPT. You'll need to create the 5 TB volume on another computer that supports GPT (or some other partition type besides MBR) and access the shared storage from an XP32 PC.

Microsoft: GPT FAQ

13. Can Windows XP x64 read, write, and boot from GPT disks?
Windows XP x64 edition can use GPT disks for data only. Only Windows for Itanium-based systems can boot from GPT partitions.

14. Can the 32-bit version of Windows XP read, write, and boot from GPT disks?
No. The 32-bit version will see only the Protective MBR. The EE partition will not be mounted or otherwise exposed to application software.

15. Can the 32-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 read, write, and boot from GPT disks?
All versions of Windows 2003 since Server Pack 1 can use GPT partitioned disks for data. Booting is only supported for Itanium-based systems.

16. Can Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 read, write, and boot from GPT disks?
Yes, all versions can use GPT partitioned disks for data. Booting is only supported for EFI-based systems.

17. Can Windows 2000, Windows NT 4, or Windows 95/98 read, write, and boot from GPT?
No. Again, legacy software will see only the Protective MBR.
