xp pro 32 or 64?

New computer build needs new os. Definately decided on xp pro, again.
I have 2X2gb ram, would like to be able to use all of it.

Could you please help me understand what it will take to go from 32 to 64bit.
Will all my files be ok?

Is there possibly a site or something that I can look up if everything I will need is available or not.

I guess for software, it will need to have a 64bit edition?
I use a fair amount fo open source and freeware, do these tend to have 64bit editions?

And for the hardware, 64bit drivers?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris.
 
I know that microsoft has some application on their website that tells you if your computer is vista compatible, so you might want to see if there is something similar for 64bit
