XP printing problem with NEC SS870

Here's the deal:

I have XP and installed my trusty NEC SS870. The drivers for XP suck out loud with 1/10 of the functions of the 98 drivers. When I print from Office 2000, it takes forever. I thought it was the EPP thingie in the BIOS, but PDF and other docs print at regular speed.
I have 10MB in the printer and it runs fine.

Any ideas why MS docs would print so slow? Oh, a weird thing, when I check the print manager as its printing it shows a 600K word file as being up to 10MB - you know when it lists how fast the doc is prinintg and gives the figure in trms of data sent to tprinter/ to data overall. (e.g., 123K / 2.9MB)

thanks for any insights.
