XP: PIO only and some sound problems

For a while now I can't get my system to recognize my CD-RW and CD-ROM as UltraDMA2 and MultiwordDMA 2, respectively. They'll both work only in PIO mode.

I tried installing VIA's miniport driver, and it'll correctly recognize both drives, but I'd be really glad if MS drivers could do the same. It's not such a complicated thing.

I don't know if that's related or not, but I'm having another problem with my system: sometimes when the system is very active I'll get erratic mouse movement, and I'm getting crackled sound also when that occurs.

i've noticed that after a series of failed reads, XP drops a drive out of DMA into PIO, so if you're reading poorly burned CDs or dirty discs, that might be part of the problem.

Uninstall the device in "device manager" - that will let windows auto-detect it upon next boot... has fixed my PIO mode ZIP drive problem in Win2k.

Crackling sound is one of the common symptoms of the SB Live. Some users don't experience the problem; many do.

By all accounts, the SB Live should be recalled, but in their position of market dominance, Creative can get away with it.

Some users have sworn off any Creative product due to their problems w/ the SB Live alone (often seen in conjunction with VIA chipsets, but the problems go away with alternate sound cards).
