Should I go with the highest model XP or a 3000+ 64. I dont think I want to venture into the 939 cpu's after reading about how new they and really untested they are. I think the XP would last me a good year till I would want to upgrade to 939. What do you guys think? Would this be a good system:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Barton
Motherboard unknown
PC3200 Ram 3x512mb
76gb Raptor HD
120GB Backup
6800GT Video card

Would that be a good gaming rig?

Even if skt 754 is discontinued right away, (which it probably will not be, at least for Semprons/some other line) you still have the upgrade to an A64 3700+ which is probably enough for a long time.

I don't know where people are getting this from...

If you go Socket 754, then you'll have no upgrade route when it comes down to it. If you go Socket 939, then you have a fairly decent upgrade path.

Go A64 939. You have much to look forward to if you do. Your rig with an A64 Winchester is very nice.

I'm tired of these idiots saying 754 will be dead.

Athlon XP isn't dead and won't be til 2005-2006.

AND IF Athlon XP is ending in 2005-2006 then 64 754 Won't end until 2006-2007.

I'm tired of these idiots acting like in March 2005, All 754 chips will self destruct.

If you think 939 is the future, it's not because in 2 years there's gonna be a chip with more pins and more of you mumbling idiots will say that's the future. You don't know what the future is. In Q2 2005, there could be no earth.

Point : 754 WON'T BE DEAD!!!!!

939 IS NOT THE FUTURE!!!!!!!!!! (AT LEAST FOR MORE THAN 1.5 YEARS)

That depends on when the Athlon XP ends its production run. AFAIK, AMD is moving quickly towards the Sempron range now.

Your first sentance doesn't make any sense.

But Socket 939 will last longer. That is the point.

I forsee a future where you have a heart attack over something so trivial.

Definetly 64 over Xp. I would go with 939 too. Not really sure why you think they are untested.

754 is a good value and a step up from Barton. We're still seeing Duron around, so the same will hold true for 754. Hmmm... maybe I should upgrade to 754 now and wait to see what AMD's plans are for next year on the 939.

I'm not sure where you're seeing Duron chips for sale- dabs.com and overclockers.co.uk don't show as having any in stock, or even listed. My company certainly can't get them anymore.

64/Socket 939. Socket 939 has a future beyond 4000+, 754 doesn't.

Socket A and Socket 754, for all intents and purposes, is dead. AMD *might* release more for either/both, but that will entirely depend on Market demand.

Lots of people use it still and Best Buy still sells it. They had some great boards like A7N8X Deluxe and NF7-S. Athlon XP will still be used.

My mistake and I should have edited it.. May. The guy said Quarter 2 of 2005. 12 Months? Divide by 4. Second quarter is May. And yes, he said that.

An AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 939 won't last THAT MUCH LONGER than an A64 3000+ 754. And they cost nearly the same, so you could always trade it in.

Hehe, eventually yes. For the next 3-4 years it will reign supreme, on the AMD side anyways.

AMD is essentially renaming the Athlon XP to the Sempron and moving the line to socket 754 to be it's budget line.

Socket 939 won't go much above 4000+ since the next step is dual-core.

Socket 754 will be around for a while as A64 Sempron if nothing else, but it's true it will probably be easier to find a 939 3400+ - 3800+ in a year than it will be to find a 754 3700+.

For a budget system though, a $200 socket 754 2800+ / mobo combo is much faster than an XP 3200+, and a 3000+ combo for $230 is faster still. Buy it, use it for a couple of years, then get a socket-X dual-core system.

First up, please learn how to edit posts. Picking through the carcass of my post, trying to find your replies is tiresome.
Secondly, manufacturers are currently running on "last stock", i.e. there won't be any more.

My mistake and I should have edited it.. May. The guy said Quarter 2 of 2005. 12 Months? Divide by 4. Second quarter is May. And yes, he said that.

Actually, my point was that no-one said Socket 754 chips are going to self-destruct.
What I'm trying to get at is that Socket 754 is a dead-end upgrade path. AMD aren't going to release any further speed hikes on 754, so what's the point in staying with it? Nostalgia?

If you think 939 is the future, it's not because in 2 years there's gonna be a chip with more pins and more of you mumbling idiots will say that's the future. You don't know what the future is. In Q2 2005, there could be no earth.

Your first sentance doesn't make any sense.

Eh. It does.

Eh, no it doesn't. That's some terrible grammar right there, and I really don't have much of an idea what you're trying to say.

An AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 939 won't last THAT MUCH LONGER than an A64 3000+ 754. And they cost nearly the same, so you could always trade it in.

No, it won't. I'd give it 1-2 years, maybe a little more.
However, if they cost nearly the same, then what's the reasoning behind NOT going Socket 939?
Gun, meet your foot.

I forsee a future where 939 isn't the future.

We all forsee that. I also see a closer future where Socket 754 is dead and can't be upgraded. That is the point.

And AMD is moving some of the Semprons to 939...
But they've basically making it so:
A)939 - Entry level - sempron
High-end - A64
B)754 - Entire Sempron range
Old A64s

So while 754 isn't "dead", all the new stuff will be sempron based.

And just when you think about upgrading that 939 CPU, Nforce 8 comes out with Soundstorm 3 and Firewire 4 - So the MB gets replaced anyway.
