XP - on bootup, does not ask for password

I only have one user defined in Win XP Home Ed. It used to boot up to the welcome screen and ask for the password, but now it boots up
directly to the desktop. I do have a password defined, because, if I log off and get back to the welcome screen, it asks for the password to log back on. How can I make it boot up to the 'welcome screen' again. I want the password protection.

Thanks.

control panel -> user accounts -> click on "change the way user logs on or off" -> make sure "use the welcome screen" is turned on

I had that checked, in addition to 'fast user switching'. I even added another user, and it still boots directly to the first user's desktop without asking for password. To get to the other user, I have to log off and get to the welcome screen.
