Offline Files in Windows XP keeps saying my file server is unavailable for reconnect. But the server IS available. I can ping it, and if I disable offline files, then I can connect to the file share just fine. But once Offline Files is enabled, the file share is disconnnected.

This is happening on several computers, but most computers work just fine with this file share and with Offline Files enabled. Windows 2000 and Windows XP computers connenct to the file share, but I believe the problem has only shown up on some of the Windows XP computers. Also, these Windows XP computers work for a long time with Offline Files enabled and then one day this problem shows up.

These people really really need Offline Files enabled, so if anyone has any ideas for this, I would appreciate it.

edit: also, this is a Samba file server, by the way.

I love the 'btw'. If you google for 'xp offline fiels samba' you'll see this appears to be a common problem with XP Sp2 and Samba. I did catch this "Samba 3.0.22 or later. Earlier versions cannot work correctly with Vista Offline Files", dont know if the same applies to XP but its a place to start.

I did google for "xp offline files samba" but I only found one case of this in a mailing list message from 2005 which apparently went unanswered. I do have Samba 3.0.23c. I could upgrade to Samba 3.0.25b. Maybe I'll add "sp2" into the search. If you found something that has an answer, please post a link to it, otherwise I'll keep searching.

edit: I've also found a page with two people saying they've had this problem with Windows 2003 file shares. edit: and another with SBS 2003
