XP not recognizing GeForce 4400 as Graphics Accelerator?

So I got a new Abit Siluro 4400 GeForce4 yesterday, uninstalled the GeForce 2 GTS from my system and installed the new Card recognized it as a 4400 nvidia, everything seemed fine. Went to click on Jedi Knight 2 and I get a error message stating that my system doesn't have a 3D graphics Accelerator so I it cant load the game.

I assumed it was the game itself causing the problem, so I uninstalled it, re-installed and tried again, no good same error. Next I changed the Card drivers to original Abit ones that came with it, and several others, including the latest Detonators 29.4, nothing made it work. You must remember that the GeForce2 worked just fine with the Latest Dets in it.

Anyway next step, click on Monster truck Madness2 and Need For Speed 5... same thing no hardware graphics Accellorator available. I ran a Test of Directx and I get some sort of errors, (at work right now, so I can't be more specific), although I am thinking it may be the test itself that is flawed. One thing to note is that RTCW seems to run fine.....

So now I figure it is something to do With XP, or I did something that XP doesn't like with the drivers. Does anyone have any ideas what the *** I could have done wrong? I am thinking about going back to 2K as this baffles me..

thanks

That's an odd problem indeed.

I ran a Test of Directx and I get some sort of errors, (at work right now, so I can't be more specific), although I am thinking it may be the test itself that is flawed.

If the directX tests fail that makes it seem like the version of directX on your machine needs to be updated or rolled back.
The only patch I have seen that affects DX on Xp is here in the MSKB Article (Q306676).

I remember seeing this on a gaming news site as a fix for GTA3 running under Xp.

Here's the info from that site:
GTA3 XP Bug - Windows XP + nVIDIA based cards (possibly other brands): We have found a possible problem with Windows XP that manifests itself as graphical problems both in the game menu and also during game play. We have traced this problem to be a Windows XP problem. Technically this problem is solved by the use of a newer version of d3d8.dll than is shipped on CD with Windows XP. (The version on the Windows XP CD that has problems is 5.1.26000.0 - versions tested without error include 5.1.2600.15 and 5.1.2600.29) Currently the only way we know to update this dll file is to install the Windows XP Patch: "The Computer Cannot Enter Standby or Hibernate If a Direct3D-Based Screen Saver Is Running (Q306676)" downloadable from here. This update may in the future be available as part of an official Windows XP Service Pack, a Windows XP Compatibility Update, or possibly a DirectX 8.1 update.

So anyway if you already have this update installed try removing the drivers then removing the update and re-installing the drivers again.

If you don't have the update install it.

Just a shot in the dark, hope it works.

Thanks...

I will look into that when I get home... I have installed most of the updates that are available using windows update so I may have it installed already.
