XP not recognizing 2nd HDD

I had was a single 200GB drive with my OS, and media on it.

What I want is a 36GB SATA for the OS, and two 200GB drives for media.

So...


1. I ordered the 36GB and a second 200GB.

2. The 36GB came first. I installed XP to it and lived with it for a few days.

3. Then the new 200GB came. I booted from the old 200GB and moved all my important data over to the new one.

4. I booted from the 36GB, hoping to be able to see the new 200GB with my important data on it and to reformat the old 200GB.


But neither had drive letters.

I went into disk management:
- the old 200GB (with the old OS and everything) is listed at DISK0 as BASIC, ONLINE, HEALTHY and ACTIVE.
- the new 200GB (with only my important media on it) is listed at DISK1 as DYNAMIC and UNREADABLE.


This is as far as I've gotten. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

WD Raptor 36GB SATA 10k rpm
2* WD SE 200GB HDD

did the new 200GB work and then stop working when you moved your OS to the 36GB? I woudl try formatting if you have nothing to loose on the new 200GB...

sounds like something wasn't formatted properly. there shouldn't be any reason that either disk is dynamic

couldn't tell you what the problem is tho

I wanted it to be dynamic because the intention was to have it be one half of an array and I was under the impression that RAID disks should be dynamic.

You can't format half a RAID-0 array at a time, you have to have both disks there and ready.

Fair enough. Now I have a different problem. Both 200GB drives now have drive letters and appear HEALTHY BASIC in Disk Management, but I can't access either one.

When I try, I the machine hangs for 30 seconds and then returns this error:
THE DRIVE IS NOT ACCESSABLE. SEMAPHORE TIMEOUT PERIOD EXPIRED.

Any advice?
