Xp Networking Problem

Just re-installed Xp on my laptop and now I can't resolve the names of any of my PCs on my local lan with the laptop. I can ping and do everything via IP address, but using \\Machine does not work.

Under the wireless card (linksys 54g), I have the standard default stuff installed with QoS Packet Scheduler disabled. Which leave Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Print Sharing and TCP/IP.

Any ideas?

Is the xp firewall on?

Edit: Another thing you can try is \\ip address and see if that works.

check WINS in your TCP/IP Advanced properties.

i think one of the MS auto updates recently has been turning wins off for security reasons.

WINS shouldn't be configured unless you have a WINS server on your network.

I'm thinking that the XP firewall is blocking all NetBIOS attempts to connect to other machines or vice versa.

I hope not. Turning off NetBIOS over TCP/IP would break a lot of thing in an enterprise environment. Which update are you referring to that did this?

i don't know, but i've been on several service calls over the last 2 months that were resolved by enabling wins and netbios over tcp/ip.
