Okay I'm in a real pickle
my main workstation is dead in the water right now and I don't know why.
Last night I was attempting to upgrade from vmware server to vmware workstation 6
after I rebooted I noticed the vmnet network adapters were missing and networking was broken. I could not edit tcpip properties or any properties of my lan adapter
i attempted to reinstall drivers, and on reboot the drivers fail to install saying "your device might not work properly" and "Code 1"
it shows with an error in device manager and I can't fix it.
so I bought a new $5 realtek nic at frys and installed it, and it does the same thing. Every time I reboot it again attempts to install drivers for the realtek and the onboard broadcom gigabit nic. both fail with uninformative "code 1"
I really need to get this working 🙁 I even tried installing xp again but it doesnt recognize the scsi adapter so I guess I need to leave the xp installation that HP put on there alone. Even tried a vista disk I had but it too doesnt like the scsi adapter so I want to preserve this (booting) xp installation but I need to fix networking
ive also tried safe mode w/ networking, and the same driver problem pops up.
I wish there was a log or something I could see what is happening but right click my computer/manage, logs etc shows nothing regarding the failed driver installations
I've also obviously since uninstalled vmware workstation 6 since this is what started all this. but I've succesfully used many versions of vmware on this same box and xp installation so I dont know wtf happened
