XP/ME Network

With my Windows ME and Windows XP i can have them both connect to the internet throught my linksys (wired) router. but i cannot have them file/print share!

Turn off the Windows XP firewall. As long as it is enabled, you won't be able to share resources from the XP PC to the ME PC. (If you have Service Pack 2 installed on the XP machine you could set up a trusted zone for the ME computer, but since you have a hardware firewall in that Linksys router, it's easier to just turn the XP software firewall off.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but you might need to install netbios on both PCs for simplicity. I am pretty sure it makes things alot easier for win98/95 pcs, but once again, for ME it is just a guess.

Hate to admit this here but I was never able to get file sharing or printer sharing working through my wired linksys router. According to what I read it was supposed to work but I was sure I had the sattings right and it didn't. What I did at the time was add a small hub to the router and connected both computers to that and then the hub to the router. In contrast, I have since upgraded to the wireless version and print and file sharing worked out of the box. Maybe try a firmware upgrade? Good luck.

Glad I could help. It's always the first thing I have people try when they're experiencing difficulties with file sharing, especially on Windows XP. 🙂
