I think this is may be OS-specific, so I'll post here.
I have 2 XP machines in my house, let's call them XP1 and XP2. XP2 cannot access XP1 due to authorization failure - in the event log of XP1, the reason was given as "The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this machine".
I have enabled the Guest account on XP1 (but prevented the account from logging on locally), and that method works for me in 2000 so I didn't expect it to be a problem here.
The thing that got me stumped is that only file sharing is not working. I can access and use the printer if I directly type the destination of the printer in the Add New Printers wizard (i.e. \\<my PC name>\<my printer name>), and ICS works too.
I've checked the FAQs, and have double-checked my common settings like IP, workgroup name and protocols.
If I create a user account on XP1 for XP2 then it will be able to access XP1 but then that's not what I want to do. So it all points to some security or authentication setting in XP. I've fiddled around with some of the settings under "Administrative Settings -> Local Security Policy" and also gpedit.msc but haven't found a solution yet.
Also, another weird thing is that although XP2 does not have the Guest account enabled, XP1 can still access XP2's shares - it pops up a logon window to allow my to type in another user name and password. So again, this somehow suggests a problem with my Guest account on XP1?
Any ideas or comments to shed light on this situation is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
atwl
