XP-M @ 2.4 vs A64 3000+

OS

which would you upgrade to? I already have a suitable XP/NF2 mobo and the 2600M cpu costs 110 or so. Frys is having a bundle special on the A64 3000+ and MSI NEO K8N-FSR for 230.

their about equal in performance, but the athon 64 still has its edge, especially if you plan on overclocking also.

2.4 isn't automatic with the mobile chips, its still overclocking the part. However if you plan on overclocking the mobile chip why not the A64? If that's what you're doing then the A64 would definately be faster and better for current and future apps.

a barton at 2.2 is only an xp 3200+, which is a little slower then the athlon 64 2800+. the mobile at 2.4ghz is still slower then the athlon 64 3000+.

I'd wait for a64 till the socket939s get cheaper. Most peops are getting over 2.4 with 2600m and that would be fast enough for just about anything nowadays.

If you overclock the XP-M then it is unfair NOT to overclock the Athlon64. It is more money, but it is faster at stock vs stock and also faster at OC'ed to OC'ed.

note that you can't overclock much (if at all) using the K8T800 chipset which is used in the MSI K8T Neo, because there is no pci/agp lock. Max stable overclock in this board is about 210 MHz. But still, the A64 running @10x210=2100 MHz would still have better performance that AXP @11x220=2420.

I had a mobile barton at 2800 MHz. My A64 3000+ at 2350 MHz is noticeably faster in doom 3. In windows I don't notice very much difference. Virus scans seem faster.
I bought a used A64 that does 2500 MHz at stock voltage. I look forward to seeing what I can do with that when it gets here.

another little q... which "number" is the best to get (price/performance)? i saw a 2400 @2.0GHz with a 333 bus, or a 2500 @1.8GHz with a 266 bus (same 45W)... Is it better to get the lower bus speed so that it oc's better? and which board would be the best to get?

I'd get either the 2200m or 2600m from newegg. I bet they all oc about the same but I don't even have one. As far as bus speed Id say the mobiles can all reach at least 400 so I don't think it matters. For some reason I would stay away from 754 if you havent bought one yet. The sempron is evil and it will infect all 754 boards 😛

i have overclocked my a64 3200+ with air cooling to 2.65 with an zalman cpl al7000a or what ever u call it(at school and cant remember the name of it) i can get much higher with the water cooling i am about to put in. id go with the a64 it deffinetly has an edge to the mobile xps

Cause you've got an equal shot with any speed rated mobile barton. I think I may buy the 2200m soon unless I can muster enough cash for a64 n mobo.

No brainer. A64. You have a better shot of hitting 2.5 with A64 than a mobileXP not to mention ones faster than the other.

However That mobo and frys 'deal' is a bad idea not only does it have no locks it's via chipset which has a ...reputation. MSI is the worst mobo maker IMO. They use the cheapest chineese capicitors and have even been sued for thier garbage.

Why not get the same chip, better board like shuttle ar51 or Chaintech value VNF-250, or EPOX 250GB and a free farcry game for the same price from mwave.com as part of thier combo specials?

Not really more money at this point.. I just put together a A64 combo from mwave for $209 with the highly overclockabe nforce3 250 mobo and farcry.

There is absolutly no reason to buy mobile xp's at this point in time. It's price to performance ratio has been trumped by A64 skt 754.
