XP Log on takes forever to a win2k server

Anyone know any fixes for this? I have done clean installs on two machines to try and get this to go faster. The windows XP Machines take waaaaay to long to log on to a windows 2000 server (w2k setup using active directory). Yet windows ME and 98 have no problems at all. Tried different nics and cables etc but no difference has been made.

Any gurus here wish to take a shot?

Check your connections sounds like it could be using cached credentials, aslo you may want to check out your username you are using and see if you have any excess that you could cut down in your profile it may be just taking it that long because it is mapping drives.

no all conections seem to be fine as I said I can swap out the hdd with a win98 setup or a win me setup and all runs flawlessly. Even when no drives are mapped still takes forever in xp to log on. Once on everything seems to be fine navigating the network resources seem to be a bit sluggish but not as bad as the log on is

Do you have a DNS server set up on the Win2k Server?...if so is the DNS server functioning properly?...check your logs for any DNS errors...nine times out of ten DNS is the cause of problems with Win2K Server running AD

Make sure your windows xp client are configured to use a dns server that has a record pointing to the domain controller.

Yep, DNS is the key here. I had two XP Pro computers that would take five to ten minutes to login upon bootup. Turns out the DNS settings were messed up on the computers. I hardcoded the DNS server (my 2k Server) into the IP stack of the XP Pro machines and *poof* instant network login.

actually static IPs are assigned to the pcs.....

---edit-----

duh lol I got dchp and dns mixed up there lol I'll check it out

Yep my problem was dns related as well with a XP login, my thread should be here within the last few days it has some good info in it.
