Xp Locking Up

Alright, after disabling this Legacy USB thing in the BIOS, memtest runs w/o a hitch, even on aggessive settings... So I get back to Windows and I'm hit with another lock up. I don't think it's the memory... I don't think it's heat... (CPU @ 37C Mobo @ 30C) Could it be power? I have 2 CD drives, an Asus P4C800 Deluxe mobo, 2 WD 80gb in a RAID0, and an SB Audigy 2 card (in PCI 5, if it matters). I have 2 case fans. 1 gb off Twinx Corsair 3200LLPT.... and a GeForce4 ti4400 128mb. (4x AGP) My processor is a P4C 3.0ghz. Everything is at stock speed... I use a logitech mx700 mouse. this is my only USB device....

When this happens, my computer just hard locks up, frozen. No way out but the reset button. It tends to happen when I try to start a game... or it'll happen while I'm just browing along in IE... it's totally random.

No errors in Event view in XP.... So I'm thinking... power supply... IRQ conflicts maybe? Anyone? Help?
 
I wouldnt say the PSU because that USUALLY causes random reboots rather than lockups...as to what else it could be i dont know,,,try running with the bare minimum and keep adding bits until it happens...maybe run prime 95 torture test each time u add something new over night.
 
1) You could get a USB > PS/2 converter and try your MX700 on a PS/2 port.
2) Borrow a PSU from a friend or parts systems or whatever and try it....it doesn't even have to be fully mounted in your case for you to test it.
3) Verify your temps in the BIOS (assuming you've been using MBM or SpeedFan or similar).
4) Try the Audigy in a different PCI slot.

I see that in my IRQ report thing, both my GF4ti4400 and my USB Universal Host controller are on the same IRQ #, 16.

Also, my RAID controller is on the same IRQ as my Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller.

Could either of these cause a problem?
 
I think I figured out a fix to keep it from locking up... by clocking my chip back from 3.0ghz to 2.25, it seems to run rock solid. It's about damn time I got this problem fixed. Anyways, so I'm set. Wish someone else had posted this idea for a fix, took me like a week to figure this out...
 
Have you set VDIMM to ~2.7V and backed the memory timings down to 2.5-3-3-7 or looser? That's been the solution thus far.
 
Nah, running memtest, I ran 5 tests at 2-2-2-5... no errors, no lockups, no problems, so my memory and memory subsystem check out....

ANy other ideas?
 
Well if memtest fails, then the system will fail... but memtest no longer fails for me.... So I don't think it's a memory problem... No lockups in a day now... maybe i'm past it.
 
Well, I ended up clocking it back to regular speeds... everything seems alright now... so I still have NO idea what was causing the lockups... Wierd. I suspect power supply or heat.
 
Damn, it just locked up when I went to start America's Army... What would cause it to lock up when starting a game, when it's run all day long w/ no hiccups?
 
I suggested adjusting the memory timings and voltage based on the fact that this has been a solution for others with the exact same hardware that you have. If you didn't try it yet, I encourage you to give it a shot 🙂 Not gonna repeat myself again, unless it's to bust a rhyme on you for not listening... 😉
 
You're not gonna believe me,but I lock up much faster w/ settings of 2 3 2 6, and 2.75v than I do w/ 2 2 2 5 and 2.75v. I can't explain it... But I can run stable much longer w/ 2 2 2 5 settings... So is there anything else that could be the problem?

Actually much of the time, if u can notice instabilty running it for 10 minutes should be satifying enough, and when it's all together do it longer 🙂
 
When runnign at 2 2 2 5, I dont' expeience ANY lockups until I try to start a game like america's army.
 
Can you disable fast writes in the bios? Try lowering the AGP speed. If it locks up when starting a game. Probably something to do with the video.
