A friend of mine is buying an XP PRO media and key off a guy and the guy swears its legit, unregged.
Any way i can verify the authenticity of the key to make sure its on the up-and-up?

He could have the guy call Microsoft and have him fax over a form stating so (not sure if that's even possible but it's the only thing I can think of)

I think your buddy should just buy an unopened copy instead of possibly getting owned when he finds out it's already been registered.

Otherwise, try calling Microsoft and see what you can find out.

if it comes with a COA then i would consider that a licence to use the software. if it didn't work i think you'd be justified in generating another key.

Not if you want to install SP1. 😉

The completely useless nature of the posted key is probably why this thread isn't locked.

If there is a real COA, you'll probably be okay. But if it were my friend, I'd tell him to just cough up the extra money and get a boxed or OEM (with floppy cable!) copy.
