xp install size?

Don't feel bad, mine took 2.45 G!
Wonder why there are differences in install size?

I did a clean install on a 5G partition, with XP pro.
 
Part of it is based on how much physical RAM you have installed. Since by default XP makes a page file which is (I think) twice the size of your installed RAM. It also enables hibernation by default which creates a hibernation file equal to your amount of RAM. So if you have 512MB of RAM, these two files are 1536MB.

So if this bothers you, disable hibernation and reduce your pagefile size.

So how do I disable hibernation?

(my installation is about 2Gbs, even with the pagefile on a different partition, which XP decided upon!!)
 
Go into the Control Panel and run the Power applet. There's an option in there to disable hibernation. Unclick it. That'll remove the hidden hibernation file and reclaim the disk space.
 
Once I subtract the size of my swapfile, I see that the amount of data on my C: partition is approximately 1 GB. That includes Windows XP Pro, and a few other small programs.

To clear some space, I recommend that you check the size of your "Temp" directory underneath \Documents and Settings\$USER\Local Settings\Temp, and also the size of your Temporary Internet Files directory. Certain pieces of software (such as Adobe Acrobat Reader) don't seem to properly delete their Temp files after installation, thereby wasting space. And IE 6.x seems to use an absurdly huge default cache size. Even though I usually use K-Meleon or Mozilla, I'd still run IE6 a few times -- enough for it to consume almost 80 MB of space for its cache folder.

After clearing Temp and reducing the size of Temporary Internet Files, I'm down to about 900 MB for the XP install.
