(I'm posting this for a friend, this is a copy/paste of his original post on another forum..
In addition to the stuff below, he's running win98 on the machine right now without any issues, and he's tried changing the ide cables.)
I simply cannot install Windows XP Professional on my computer...
My specs:
- Intel Pentium 3 733MHz
- Abit VA6 VT82C692BX motherboard
- (VIA VT82C693 Apollo Pro Plus Chipset)
I have tried reversing ALL BIOS settings -- yes, ACPI, UDMA, even tried disabling ALL caching to no avail..
I have switched ALL hardware..
- tried 1 or 2 DIMM sticks in different DIMM slots
- tried 3 different hard drives
- tried 1 PCI and 2 AGP video cards
- removed all other hardware
- I have even updated my BIOS to the 7L version which is the newest for the VA6 motherboard
The specific problem? I boot from the XP CD.. It copies files, asks me where I want to install XP, copies more files, and then reboots.. it then goes into the graphical setup screen where it says "Installing Windows", tells me I have 39 minutes before it's done..and then 2 minutes later, it gives me one of two different error messages...

Are there any XP setup/install parameters I could try somehow? Could I perhaps copy files over for it at some point so that when setup resumed it would be farther along in the setup process? What else can I try?! I've even tried installing from Windows 98 but it eventually reboots and gets to the same spot with 39 mins remaining and BSODs on me...
Searching for more info on BAD_POOL_CALLER gets me the following info:
Parameter 1 = 0x40 : Attempt to free usermode address to kernel pool
Parameter 2 = Starting address
Parameter 3 = Start of system address space
Parameter 4 = 0
