Using 64gb ssd as boot for refurb of desktop

want to make sure it is set up properly.

tried cloning with included acronis software in
kingston ssdnowv200 kit.

Checked and saw that
ssd was still using ide mode on motherboard -
msi 785gt-e63.

Found AHCI in Raid settings( ide, sata, ahci )

Tried switching in bios to ahci and boot failed.

Tried to enable MS AHCI by regedit but did not see it in xp.

When I switched back to ide it would boot but had issues.

Decided to reinstall with driver/floppy/f6 but got message that
driver was not meant for xp system.

Tried nlite with xpsp1,sp3,ahci driver and got bluescreen

What is the proper way to get this installed?

XP ? Ugh.
What drivers are you using anyway ?
I would do a repair install of XP, and use the correct AHCI drivers slipstreamed into it.

I found this on this internet, I forgot the guys name; but kudos to him. I apparently install Win7 to my uber Samsung SSD 250 via IDE. Idiot! I know right! I'm not sure if this will work for WinXP. But this certainly fixed my issue. changing from IDE to ACHI was easy.

1. Startup "Regedit
2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlset / Services
3. Open msahci
4. In the right field left click on "start" and go to Modify
5. In the value Data field enter "0" and click "ok"
6. exit "Regedit"
7. Reboot Rig and enter BIOS (hold "Delete" key while Booting

In your BIOS select "Integrated Peripherals" and OnChip PATA/SATA Devices. Now change SATA Mode to AHCI from IDE.

You now boot into windows 7, the OS will recognize AHCI and install the devices. Now the system needs one more reboot and voilla .. enjoy the improved SSD performance.

Meh. With XP, just leave it in PATA/IDE mode. The desktop will have to be replaced or upgraded within a year, so use AHCI when that time comes.

okay this is where it stands now

I found a driver to install with F6 at the start of XP installation
someone custom modified it -dated DEC 2011

Drive is aligned but I will re-check it. Also given proper offset.
Was zero written (secure erased) after a failed cloning attempt from a hard drive

The motherboard is set for ahci as opposed to raid
The driver appears under scsi / raid controller
as amd ahci compatible raid controller

IDE lists only primary, secondary, standard dual channel pci ide

I was thinking the driver would have installed as an addition to the ide
listing but without something to compare to i really can't say that it isn't installed properly.

Tried the sata driver from the MSI website for the motherboard
sata - recognized my sata standard hard drive which wasn't showing up after installing xp to the ssd but didn't seem to change anything else

tried the Jan 2013 sata driver from the AMD website for the 700 series chipset - didn't seem to change anything.

tried the Jan 2013 raid driver from the AMD website for the 700 series chipset - measured 30-50 percent worse and was dated 2009

upgraded back to the raid driver used at f6/xp install dated dec 2011

tried diskkeeper recommendation - worse / uninstalled
tried ramdisk recommendation - no effect / uninstalled
tried ocz ssd tweaker - left as easy implementation of settings needed to operate ssd properly in xp environment

Using Crystal Disk
measurements are
read write
SEQ | 216.1 | 50.1
512k | 203.8 | 16.32
4k | 10.36 | 8.683
4kQD32 | 121.3 | 16.29

From an article about a firmware fix that my drive didn't need, it seems figures near or equal to below should be possible

read write
SEQ | 273 | 211
512k | 245 | 214
4k | 20 | 50
4kQD32 | 158 | 182

I am going to look at the forum where the firmware bug was recognized / highlited for further suggestion / fixes but wanted to update and see if there were other ideas here as to what to do next?

You have CDM results. Does that mean it installed and worked? If so, use it. But, well, not for more than 350 days. And, turn off defragging, if it's not off already.

The SB750 will not perform as well as Intel's, with an SSD.

XP will, by itself, not create an aligned partition, further reducing performance, if you don't take care of that prior to installation.

With an ICH10 or newer, you might be able to get newer Intel drivers, and get some improvements. Not so with your old AMD chipset. Just roll with it, and then figure out which OS you can and will upgrade to.
