I took out the new 512mb ram and the xp installation went fine. this boggles me because corsair is a pretty reliable company and i dont think the ram could be bad. Do you think its in my mobo? I will try taking out the older ram, and putting the new one in and see how it runs with just the new one.

It's the RAM. Try buying two match sticks or another stick that has matching timing.

i'm gonna goto fry's asap and see if i can buy another two sticks of value ram ... maybe thats the problem, the expensive 2-2-2-6-1T ram. but the strange part is that the ram is within corsair's recommendation for my k8vse board, which is single-channel. I think the 420watt thermaltake psu is enough to handle a dvd-rom, 3200+ cpu, a HD and a 6800GT oc isn't it? anyways i'm gonna call asus and corsair and see what their recommendation is.

i've found my problem drew....i'm getting a load of errors while running memtest86....
something like a few thousand errors within the first 10 minutes

good thing corsair has a lifetime warranty

alright, i used corsair's settings that they emailed me....relaxed the timing, but the problem is that i'm not getting errors, but windows still won't boot....i'll keep this post updated

well i'm reformatting again, just to be sure....since i didn't get any memory errors the second time around

but nonetheless i'm still getting blue screens and here's the msg:

stop:c0000218 registry file failure
the registry cannot load the hive file:
\systemroot\system32\config\software
or its log or alternate
it is corrupt absent or not writable

beginning dump of physical memory...
blah blah blah

wtf is going on?
