My setup:

Asus P5E-VM HDMI
Q6600
8GB DDR2 667
150GB Raptor
250GB Seagate SATA
LG 20x SATA DVD Burner
8800GT

The problem I'm having is during Windows XP setup. After it's done loading everything it needs and it says that it's starting Windows XP (the setup), I get a blue screen that has this error code:

STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I know it's being caused by having my SATA in AHCI mode instead of "Enhanced" mode in my BIOS. I don't get the error when I set SATA to "Enhanced" mode.

I want SATA in AHCI mode though since people say that my SATA gear (my burner and two hard drives) are faster if SATA is in AHCI mode.

I know my motherboard supports optical drives in AHCI because changing SATA to AHCI brings up an option in the BIOS to change the timeout for waiting for SATA optical drives during boot.

Is there any way to keep this error from happening when SATA is in AHCI mode? I have tried using different XP CDs and have one that has my motherboard's SATA drivers slipstreamed into it.

IsLNdbOi,

Did you install the AHCI drivers at the F6 prompt when you installed Windows? If you didn't, you won't be able to select AHCI without getting the BSOD...

Solution is to do a repair install of Windows and during that, install the AHCI drivers at the F6 prompt.

Procedure: Get your AHCI drivers on a floppy or CD. Now, go to the BIOS and select the AHCI instead of IDE for your HDDs. Shut the machine down, reboot into your Widows CD. Almost immediately you'll get the F6 prompt - select it. Then at the SECOND R to come up during the install process (Repair, NOT Recovery) hit R and go from there. You'll also get prompts to install the AHCI driver, just be sure to select Desktop AHCI, not Raid. The repair install should take about 45 minutes and it won't change any of your settings or programs. It will just install those drivers.

Just be sure to go to the BIOS first and select AHCI before anything else...

Good luck, Noel

Ok, found the problem. I accidentally slipstreamed just the SATA drivers. Forgot to slipstream the AHCI drivers too.

Thanks Noel.

Hey folks,

I'd like to tag along on the resolution to your BSOD, as I have been receiving the same BSOD Tech Info: : 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
I'm a moderate gamer but other than that kind of a newb - but any help toward a solution would be really appreciated. I purchased a new HP desktop about a month ago, the setup follows:

HP Pavilion m9177c HDMI
Q6700 2.66
3GB DDR2 667
320GB (x2) Seagate Barricuda SATA
LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RW SATA
8500GT

The system came with Vista Home Premium (32-bit) from HP, and my desire is to configure a dual-boot system with XP Pro so that I still have accessibility to a number of really important programs - not to mention the lighter drag on system resources while gaming. I've been following the handy dual-boot setup guide from apcmag.com, however I'm unable to get the XP disc to move forward with the install after booting. Instead I always get the BSOD and have to pull the disc out and restart ... just to get into the computer to go browse forums for help. Alas, here I am. Also, in preparing for the XP install I shrank Vista's partition to make room for another partition on C:.

In speaking with someone at my school they mentioned something along the line of newer Vista computers being setup for SATA, while XP from the disc will only work with IDE/ATA. I'm not sure exactly what that meant other than I assume drivers are probably involved, and unfortunately I'm not sure how to go about determining which changes to make - or how to go about making them.

Any help would greatly be appreciated! Thanks!

No, regular IDE/SATA should install XP fine without drivers.

Hi All,

Can anybody help me?

I've created XP disc with SATA Drivers following the instructions from here:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto...ndows-xp-installation/
(but there's is another section: Finding Drivers for XP which I didn't follow as it was just a description of how to find & extract the drivers without a floppy drive).

My BIOS is currently in AHCI mode.

1) I put the XP disc with SATA drivers implemented into the drive.
2) Boot from CD
and then I tried 2 solutions:
3) Wait until installation files load. At the end I get a BSOD with 0x0000007B error and have to reset laptop...
I get this screen everytime I try so... I tried different solution:

4) While booting from CD, when I get a message (press F6 to intall some additional drivers), I press F6 and wait until the files load.
5) When the files load I get a new screen and a message:
Please insert the disk labeled Manufacturer-supplied hardware suppord sisk into Drive A: * Press ENTER when ready. (ENTER=Continue, ESC=Cancel, F3=Exit).

And I don't know what to do... Nothing happens when I press ENTER because the drivers are on the CD, not on the 'Non-existing Floppy Drive".... How can I force the setup to look for the drivers on the CD?
How to complete the SATA drivers installation?

Thanks in advance for your help :smileyhappy:

Thanks for your answer :)

What do you mean by 'slipstream'?

I actually did exactly the same as in this link:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto...ndows-xp-installation/
I have downloaded the drivers from this location:
http://support.dell.com/suppor...libid=41&fileid=224400

Then, using nLite I implemented the drivers into the XP disc.
As on the pictures from the first link: I've chosen iaahci.inf file, then selected drivers for my mother board and clicked implement

What's wrong with that instruction then?
Please try to explain it to me.

There's a program called "NLite" that makes adding drivers, etc. to a XP disc very easy. Download the AHCI drivers for your motherboard from your motherboard manufacturer's site (it may also be on the CD that came with your motherboard). When you have the AHCI driver (the *.inf, *.sys and *.cat files) you can use NLite to slipstream them into your disc. Make sure to check "textmode" in NLite for the drivers.

That's exactly what I did, I used NLite.
The second link contains: Intel AHCI Driver and that's what I've downloaded and slipstreamed to my XP disc.
What have I done wrong then?
Why is this BSOD showing up when I put XP disc? and why can't I install any drivers by pressing F6 (i have no options/drivers to choose from) only a floppy A:

What do you mean by checking 'textmode' in Nlite for the drivers?

Thanks

In NLite, when you choose to integrate drivers, a box will pop up with a checkmark box. Check the box if you want the drivers in text mode, uncheck the box if you don't want text mode. You need to have them in text mode. Also, once the AHCI drivers are slipstreamed in, you don't have to press F6 when it asks you to. Once the drivers are slipstreamed, you just let setup run.

Also, if your XP CD does not have SP2 in it, you will need to slipstream the SATA drivers too (or slipstream SP2) since native SATA support didn't show up in XP until SP2.

I've selected drivers in Textmode before.
My XP disc has SP2 and still I get the Blue Screen... :-/
I don't really know what the problem is...
Have you got any other ideas?

Thanks

I just wanted to update on my situation:

I was able to enter the BIOS and change the settings for the HD from AHCI to IDE. Just to test it, I restarted and Vista indeed wouldn't boot, instead yielding the BSOD I'd experienced during the formerly attempted XP install. I rebooted again, with the XP disc in my CD drive and the XP install went forward just fine, I was able to select the secondary partition for XP to install to and finish the installation. However, upon rebooting XP actually wouldn't open - it was installed but not accessible. This time I got a black screen with the message, "Error Loading Operating System". After several restarts and the same message, I entered the BIOS and reset the HD to AHCI, then restarted again with the intention of going into Vista. Instead I got the same black screen, with the same brief error message. So I grabbed my System Recovery discs.... and reset it all to factory settings. So know I'm starting over... I'll repost when I have an update.

i found out the other day you can do this without slipstreaming. just install in ide mode. and then force an update of your controller driver to use the AHCI/SATA RAID controller driver.
reboot system, go to BIOS and switch to AHCI, then viola no more BSOD

good to know for XP people without floppy drives. Vista you can just dump them into a USB stick so no need for this.

Well I started over with a completely fresh install of Vista, then repartioned following the instructions in apcmag.coms page about setting up a dual-boot system (using DISKPART from the command prompt). Then restarted, went into BIOS, changed HD to IDE mode for compatibility with XP discs, and restarted again. Booting off the XP disc I was able to install XP without the BSOD. However, when the system restarted as part of the install I receive ... no... not blue... but a Black Screen of Death. With the eerie message, "Failed to load operating system." Aaaaagggh.

Well the apcmag.com article said that that installing XP would could result in a corrupted bootloader, and that "this is an easy fix". "Simply put the Vista disk back in, and run a system repair from it". Done and done. BUT nothing was found to be repairable... and upon restart I continue to receive a black screen with the "Failed to load OS" message.

???

I really don't want to just rinse and repeat this entire process to end up at the same spot -- any suggestions?

My other idea -
Drive 0 - C: Currently OEM Vista install location
Drive 0 - K: Currently the XP install location

Do you folks think it would be safe to try to do a clean install of XP in place/over Vista on the C:? Would that cause even more problems?

Thanks for the input.
