XP Home Network problem

I recently set up a home network between two computers and a DSL router. I am actually using Phoneline technology for one of the computers, and ethernet for the other. However, I think that's irrelevant, since I am able to transfer files and access DSL from either computer.

However, I have been running into a frustrating thing having to do with folder sharing. I can't seem to turn off "Read Only" on one of the My Documents folders for one of the computers. When I pull up the Properties window for the directory, it shows the Read Only box checked off with a faded green box. I am able to clear the box, and click the Apply button, but it doesn't stick. Every time I re-access the folder properties, it shows the Read Only box checked. I am trying to do this from the same computer that the folder resides on. Both computers in the network use XP Home. This problem of course affects the ability of the other computer to copy files to that folder, but also simple things like having programs save files to that folder as well.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Anyone have a guess? This problem is really driving me crazy, and Microsoft's Knowledge Base is totally unhelpful on this one.

Thanks, Jack! That was a very easy to understand article, which may have solved the problem -- I'll try a few things tonight...

this is probably due to inherited permissions that xp sets up by default. do you have the same user account set up on both pcs? also, try the security, not only the sharing, tab of the folders properties. see if you can turn off inheriting permissions from parent folders.

cryme,

I actually do have the same user accounts set up on both pc's. Is the fix then to simply set the same read-only attributes on both pc's?

Thanks for your help!
