XP: Getting past Password Protected Login

Ok, this is my mother's computer. We had 2 seperate logins, one for me and one for her. My brother got the bright idea to add and administrator login and password protect it while making my mother's account and mine limited. Now, I cannot install anything, and he refuses to change it. What a great family, right? 🙂

So I guess I just want to know how I can get around the Limited Account and just install my game! I'd love to crack his password, but I have no clue what it might be. Can you guys help me "astonish" him and make him realize he his not the Great "Net-Admin" ?

Thanks

Brandon

You are out of luck when it comes to cracking his password or bypassing the settings he has imposed. Time to try a little diplomacy.

Well crap. I was reading on another site that deleteing some "SAM" file, I already forgot the name would erase the administrator password. I'd have to do it through DOS, but I don't think i want to go through that much trouble.

Go into your BIOS, and set a password in order for the computer to boot.

It won't help you with your XP problem, but it might give you some leverage 🙂

Just boot up in safe mode and make yourself admin. Sadly enough, that's all there is to it. Once you relogin to regular mode, make your bro's account limited and make sure he doesn't see/find out how you did it.

Good luck.

If the drive is FAT 32 formatted renaming or deleting the SAM file will cause Windows to rebuild it without an administrative password. If the drive is NTFS formatted it will not work and will require a 3rd party crack program or an NTFS dos program.

Good Luck

Search the web for passwd. It makes a linux boot disk that will boot and let you change the Administrator Password. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS other wise you could disable all passwords. Do not change the syskey or all passwords will change. Change the Administrator password write the settings then reboot log in as Administrator change your rights to admin and make your brothers limited. To find his password use a program called l0pht crack. Hope that helps.
😀

That doesn't work on XP 🙁 sorry my friend. He'll have to edit the sam file with passwd

renaming the SAM file will most likely remove all users. It should recreate the Administrator account not sure what password it uses tho. The link to get ntpasswd is http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ This will work on NT/2K/XP read the instructions if you need help email me and i'll find a way to set up a messaging program to walk you thru it. I've used this many times on all 3 types of systems (NT/2K/XP) but you have to do it right or all users passwords will be moved.
