XP freezing up

90% of the time, when I stop VLC or PowerDVD (or they reach the end of the movie and the video/audio stops), there's a few seconds where I can use the machine as normal, then the mouse stops moving and XP is completely locked up. The only solution is to power-cycle. This has also happened occasionally with WinAmp after pausing a song, but not with any games (not that I've played much recently).

Steps taken:

1) going back to an earlier version of the AC'97 drivers
2) ran memtest86 overnight which completed 7 passes with no errors
3) reinstalled XP

I ran DXDiag before the reinstall and that didn't report any problems. All drivers are current and all relevant Windows updates are installed. I use Avast for AV.

Any ideas?

Rig:

A64 3200 (no overclock)
2GB (2 x 1GB Corsair Value)
DFI Lanparty UT NF3
Galaxy 6800 (no overclock)
2 internal HD's (SATA), 2 external (USB)
Tagan 480W

Try a PCI sound card if you can.

I was starting to think along those lines. I'll skank my mates sound card and give it a bash.

I don't know what you just said, but I think that sounds like a good idea.
