i looked on the windows site a bit for this but i'm not even sure where i should start.

i was just surfing the web and got an error message "the computer has shut down to prevent damage" etc.... the only other time i saw this screen was OC'ing a vid card too high and of course it pointed to the nvid driver or whatnot.

anyway, error message reads

stop:0x000008e (0xc000001d, 0xBF8053ef, 0xF1A252FC, 0x0000000)
win 32k.sys
address BF8053EF
Base at BF8000000

does the win32k.sys indicate its a software issue only? i do OC the cpu some but i've never had any problems, its a p4 and can run prime for hours on end.

any help?

looks like they have all kinds of other stop 0x0000 messages but not ending 8e (according to help and support)
so it looks like its some sort of ntfs based error according to what the others are pointing to?

It seems to usually indicate a software/hardware driver problem.
Have discovered windows has a tool called verifier.exe that is supposed to help troubleshoot these problems....I know because thats what I am trying to do right now with some luck but not complete success yet.
here are a couple links that talk avbout verifier.

good luck let me know if you have success still learning my way around the tool myself

thank you, i'll take a look at it.

funny how it just happened out of the blue. actually, i got 2 crash to desktops in an old pc game yesterday. the game is certainly not taxing on the system. only other thing i can think of is if i screwed something up running crapcleaner because when the game crashed it noted an error in a temp file for some reason?? didn't make sense, i really didn't give it much thought other than it was probably that the game is so old, 5 years or so that maybe it wasn't really compatible.

i'll et post anything i might find when i look at those links tomorrow.

That error message results from a variety of reasons. Generally, something's not stable. Could be CPU, GPU, hdd, PSU or RAM. I'd start by swapping out the dimms, followed by swapping out the PSU.

ahhh, so maybe i just pushed the cpu too high? i backed it down after the crash, but it had been prime stable overnight before the error. thank you for the input!! gotta look at these links too.

If you have a ATI vid card start there with uninstalling and then reinstalling new drivers.

no, its a 6800gt rest of the specs are p4c 2.4@2.8, asus p4p-800vm, 1 gig ram, 36 gig raptor, 80 gig wd cavalier sata, 2 opticals and a Tt 480w which i tested with a multi and got a good +12(12.05) and +5(5.10) under prime. i run the 6800gt at stock with 67.66 drivers.

the two in game errors were just the explorer message saying it had encountered a problem and needed to shut down, the bsod was just surfing with about 6 IE windows and outlook express open.
