xp desktop problem help

fresh install winxp, all i have on the desktop is the recyclebin icron only, is this normal?

Yep, that is normal!

If you want to make it look like the old way, then go to your display settings, and then go to the desktop tab, and click customize desktop, and check the boxes for the icons you want.
