XP Desktop not refreshing properly

Installed Windows XP SP3 fresh on an Acer laptop. Problem is that the desktop does not refresh properly. So if I save a file to the desktop, or delete a file, the change does not register until I hit a manual refresh with the F5 key. I researched this on the google, and did the "Max Cached Icons" registry entry fix. Tried a couple of other remedies from the Net, but nothing works. Any thoughts?

another SP3 bug perhaps? I know a fresh install and then SP3 killed Windows/Microsoft Update till I manually re-registered the core files.

How do you do that?

been looking around noone else has similar issues, but there are other issues with SP3 being installed fresh, I'd keep looking and as a side note, what make and model of Monitor and video card do you have? what screen resolution, refresh rate and driver version?
