XP Copyright

I had a question about XP professional. I just bought the academic upgrade of XP pro. I have 2 computers. Can I install it on both computers? Or will this new activate feature not let me do that. If not I'll just leave one of them on 98SE.

Thanks,

Keeper

1 license is 1 computer. unless its an open license, which i don't think academic is. though fair-use allows copies without royalty for academic and critical use (at least with books and movies)

You *can* install it on both machines, but it would be a violation of the license agreement you agree to when you press F8.

I know it's not really "legal." But for what I am getting they really shouldn't charge as much as they do. To be fair with how bad Microsoft products are they should let you install it on 5 computers, as long as you own them all. I don't like the idea if both computers are personal computers why it shouldn't be legal anyway. I can see offices and things such as that, but really I own both computers and both reside in the same house with the same user. The question is can it be done. If it can't then no big deal, I just will only install it on one computer.

Yes, it can be done, but you should really look into more consumer friendly software.

If you're not happy with what you get for your money, spend your money elsewhere. I challenge you to find ANY product at a price anywhere NEAR the price of Windows XP that lets you do half as much as you can do with XP..... ESPECIALLY at the academic price you get!

This is nothing but whining. You know what's legal and what's not. Threads that ask about getting around license violations are typically locked by the admins on these forums.

I wasn't asking how to get around copyright, I was just asking if installing it would work. I know Microsoft would know it is on two computers. I was just going to take the risk of them not wasting the time to hunt me down for one illegal copy. But since everyone doesn't think it's a good idea I'll just buy another copy, or keep one at Win98. BTW just incase you were wondering both my copy's of Win98 are legal.

I just don't like Microsoft approach to software. Get it out ASAP and work the bugs out later. You don't see IBM doing that. I believe their rule is software can only have 1 bugs per 2 million lines. I just would like to see Microsoft adopt the same type of thinking. Don't get me wrong Windows has features that no one else has, but it's just buggy. If I pay for software I don't want any bugs in it.

All software has bugs in it. If you arent happy with Microsoft Windows, use something else.

I already know what is going to happen in the future. I am going to graduate and end up working for Microsoft. Then I will see what it's really like. I know software has bugs, trust me I've written my share of buggy software. That is one reason that I waited until now to buy Win XP. I figure by now they will have most of the bugs worked out. I'm just saying they have more than the rest. But they also are the major OS maker. Everyone makes hardware and software around them. Half of the things I have will only work with windows.

I do think that Microsoft still pushes technology. Most people in the position they are in would sit back and not spend any money on R&D because they have 80% of the market. They are a good company. I would just like to see a little more testing. I think by them releasing software with 3000 bugs it shows they don't have a respect for their customers. They don't care what kind of problems their customers have. They use paying customers as beta testers. I just wait and let the testing finish and then buy the product.

They are actually just about to release service pack 1, but since they have "windows update" all the items that are in service pack 1 are already available. I just D/L 28MB of updates, over 30 updates, who knows how many bugs each fixed. I have to say windows update was a great addition to windows. It gets bugs fixed much faster, and I like the fact they have drivers too.

Many service packs introduce new bugs 🙂
