XP computer cannot access internet

Ok I was trying to help out a friend with his slow computer. Ran MS Anti-spyware program to remove the spyware from the computer. Over 70 spyware programs were installed on this computer. Now the computer cannot connect to the Internet.

I tried to run Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy but both of them during the scan the computer would shut down.

I did also find this program in the Consolidated Security Thread: WinSock XP Fix

Any more help and information is greatly appreciated in advance.

I was going to say the Winsock XP fix, but appears that hasnt help either. Have you tried the scan in safe mode without all the services running. Some of those nasties have the pc shut down when they kill a service.

You are probably still infected. Restart the computer in "safe mode" and run the scans from there. Make sure your a/v and a/s's are up to date.

If you can find WinsockFix you will have to run that. Something messed with your registry settings and the winsock settings thus the reason you cannot get online after removing spyware.

First, let's see if it really is a Winsock-related issue. Here's a quick and dirty way. Start > Run > msinfo32
Expand Components > Networking > and click on Protocol. On the right at the very top, it should read "MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]"
If not, post what it does say. Also, if it says something else than that, and it's running XP with Service Pack 2, just go to a command prompt (Start > Run > CMD) and type in netsh winsock reset. After that, reboot. It writes a clean winsock for you. Hope this helps.

I notice you've mentioned spyware and adware...but what about viri? also, get a free trial of webroot's spysweeper from downloads.com. I think it, combined with adaware and spybot clean out just about any spyware problem.
