XP CD Damaged...

Ok im at College and my XP CD got damaged so i cant just borrow my Dad's copy. I still have my CD-Key.

Would i still have a valid copy of Windows (ie: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG) if i torrented a copy but used my valid CD-Key?

*Once again i have purchased XP, but the disc is damaged*

Well i dont have the screwed up CD anymore. One of my little sisters took it out and left it there. It had scratches that penetrated that foil stuff so you could see through the disc. THere was no repairing it so i set burnt a copy before it got any worse. And out of that i found that i was missing the background named "autumn.jpg", it wouldn't format, and i was missing the file "autofmt.exe" (<-probably Auto Format -_-)

So then i had the brilliant (at the time) idea of ripping it as an ISO file and then taking an undamaged CD for my laptop and editing the ISO and manually putting the files back on the disc. For some reason, both files were there...so i just gave up.

Would using a torrent with a valid Windows key that i purchased create an invalid copy of Windows on my computer?

Just take a copy of your dad's CD. Or get an image off BitTorrent. Both are perfectly legal.

I can download an image off of Bittorrent and use my CD resulting in a perectly working valid copy of XP? One that will pass the Genuine WIndows Verification for all the software?

[*]Wrong forum :frown:
[*]You're asking to torrent an OS....ugh

You're asking to torrent an OS....ugh

Im not asking how where or anything like that. I'm asking if it is legal and if it will result in a valid copy. I HAVE PURCHASED WINDOWS, im not getting a hack or anything, my CD has damaged files!!

Im at college. No one here builds their own computer systems. Everyone has laptop and tablet PC's. I have the Tablet PC edition on the recovery partition of my Tablet PC.

Ya know for an elite member you dont read as well as you should. I am not buying XP again!!!!! It was expensive enough the first time i bought it. The CD is damaged, im at college, im wondering if there is anything i can do.

Kevin,

I have had this problem before, and using a different CD will usually work, as long as its not a Dell/HP/Compaq oem disk. The worst I've had happen was having to call MS for validation, but since my key was valid, it wasn't a problem. I think the tech knew I was using the wrong cd, but he didn't give me a hard time about it. I have an ISO somewhere I could try and send you. PM if you have an idea how I can get it to you.

That would be awesome. And that way nothing would be questionable in its legality or how Genuine the product is.

I believe last time i installed i used a Dell CD to format the drive and then pulled the plug after the format and then i used my damaged CD to install the actual files.

I never said you were asking "how" or "where", but you were asking and that was the basis for my comment.

So you speak for everyone at the college? I know plenty of college students are bound to build systems and have an OEM copy of an OS. Some systems still include the full OS on a separate cd.

You know, for an individual like yourself that has been a member of this forum for over 3 years should know better than to even post a thread of this nature on the forums in the first place. You never once mentioned that you would not purchase the software. Please spend less time criticizing others and more time learning proper forum etiquette.

I never said i wanted to! In fact torrenting was the very last thing I wanted to do. That is why i posted here asking for suggestions. I had a thread on OS Level RAID yesterday and someone suggested torrenting in that thread. Thats how i got that idea.

Obviously no i dont. Let me rephrase it, no one that i have met in my short tenure here at VT has built his or her own computer. And it isn't like i can go around asking people either, I would have to know someone.

I understand about the OS on a seperate CD. My Tablet PC actually has an option to burn the recovery partition to a CD, but i dont see where that will get me. That is tablet PC edition and I dont believe it is just Windows. I think it is more of a restore CD than an OS CD.

I don't need to be lectured about my forum etiquette. I made it plain and clear that i have purchased a valid copy of windows and am looking for ways to reinstall it since my CD is damaged. I never suggested that i was attempting to do anything illegal. In fact i was asking about the legality of torrenting the files for use with a VALID CD-KEY.

For someone who has been on these forums for 7 years, and has attained the title of elite member you sure are selective of what you read. Please by all means, if you have a suggestion for something i can do by all means suggest it. It would be a huge help to me, if not then lecturing me is not going to help matters.

(Oh, and I apologize for making that previous post somewhat personal)
