XP- can't access network shares

I am running XP Pro, and have reinstalled it several times now, but cannot get it to reliably access network shares. I have a Dragon Plus with onboard LAN that I use normally, but also tried an Intel nic. I am running a domain, and I can login to the domain and access my Exchange server, but cannot access the shares on that server or on my other Me machine. They show up okay, but when double-clicking on the share, I get hourglass and a lockup. I have been having these types of problems every time I install XP, even on my old machine before upgrade. Is there something I'm missing in the network setup of XP? I have tried static IP and DHCP too. Tried dropping off the domain to a workgroup. Same problem. The shares on my Me machine are actually full control with no password too! On this newest install of XP, it worked okay at first and then quit. Sometimes after 5-10 minutes, it will actually open the share though. Anything I'm missing?

Hello,

Are you using a hub or switch?

Do you have a cross over cable?

Try this first, set your NIC to 10 mbs half duplex.

Reboot...

For some reason, my networking has almost always been "slow". As I think about it right now, I wonder if that is because I run TCP/IP. I know IPX/SX is faster for small networks, but I do not know if this is your problem, or even mine. Anyone have ideas?

Also, it seems it is random whether you are able to connect or not, suggesting that it is not a setting, but a hardware issue somewhere. This may be dumb, but how long is your cable? 100m is about the maximum length.

I was able to fix it by formatting and reinstalling. It hasn't cropped up again yet. My networking is still slow though. I have tried both on-board LAN on my dragon plus and an intel card. I have tried multiple cables, all of which are 10' or so. I am using an 8-port Netgear switch. I even tried different ports on there. I finally just gave up and reinstalled. I made a ghost image after reinstalling where the networking worked properly, so I can restore that image if need be. I wish I knew what caused it, but at least I am by it now.

High Rate of Collisions on 100-MB Networks (Q315237)

SYMPTOMS
If you use the TCP/IP protocol and you have a 100-megabyte (MB) network adapter, you may notice slow network performance while you copy files. You may also experience this slow performance while you use Windows Explorer in Windows XP.

Note that although the slow performance is known to occur on several 100-MB network adapters, this issue is not specific to Windows.

CAUSE
This issue is due to a high rate of early collisions on the network. The interframe gap (the amount of time that a workstation waits before attempting to transmit on the wire) is less than the IEEE 802.3 specification of 9.6 microseconds.
