XP Built in Defragger

How has XP Pro's built in defrag program been working? Do you think there is a need for a third party defrag app. I was thinking of buying Diskeeper 7.0.

diskeeper seems to be a better defragmenter than the built in one in XP and 2k. whether its worth buying is another question, though. i dont know how much better diskeeper is than the default defragmenters.

I do believe that the built in defragger in WinXP is actually a licensed scaled-down version of Diskkeeper.

I used Norton's Speed Disk on my drives last night. Then I checked the fragmentation through XP's disk management. On FAT32 volumes, XP said I was badly fragmented. On NTFS, I was only 1% fragmented. I think I will give a whirl on the FAT32 volumes with XP's defrag. Expect a report back after the weekend.

its the boot time defragmenter that makes it effective. i dont believe that built into the XP one.

i used the win xp built in defragger and a week after that ended up getting diskeeper7. after installing diskeeper 7 i did the "analyze" and it said i was heavily fragmented (52%) so i went ahead with the defrag. i had hardly done anything on the pc (besides games) in between using the resident xp defrag and the new d/k 7. im not absolutely sure but the third party progam (diskeeper) seems to be a hell of alot more thorough and has a nice scheduler.😉

I wonder if that may be because Speed disk understands Windows 98/me purposeful fragmenting of files in order to speed up application start times while XP's defragmenter does not.
