XP bootup freeze?

I was reformatting one of my machines this weekend. (950Tbird, epox 8k7a board, 256 pc133 crucial, 2.1 gig samsung, 20 gig maxtor, 32mb radeon) I got win98se on there no problem. I installed XP Home w/ no problem, but when it goes to bootup it freezes on a black screen right after the WinXP bootscreen.

???

anyone know what might cause this? the install process went with zero issues...

Try removing all the nonessential components of the computer and try again. Might want to find see if there are BIOS updates for your computer too. It is possible that you have some bad hardware. NT is pickier about hardware, so it may run fine on 98, but not XP.

I had the same problem w/ my Voodoo4 vid card.
I bought a GeForce GTS-V ($49 @ Newegg), stuck it in, and reran the install.
I got passed the black screen, was able to finish the set up, and works good now.

If you have a spare vid card lying around, I'd try it with that.

video card was the culprit - radeon drivers to be more specific.

I was able to get into xp safe mode and I updated the drivers to the newest ATI offering and I was good to go.

Thanks for the help all!
