I have lost count of how many threads I have read and suggestions tried before posting here. I have AT&T u-verse @6Mbps, the cable enters the house and connects with a Motorola NVG510 modem/wireless router. I have turned the wireless off, then connected a Belkin DB750 wireless router. I use the belkin because it has two usb ports integrated, I have my printer and a 1tb external hdd connected to those ports. This way all three laptops can print wirelessly, and use the hdd as a backup device. Also hardwired to the motorola is a PS4 and XBox1, and also I work from home and must be hardwired to the modem while working, the rest of the time I connect wirelessly.

Now on my network is two Dell Inspiron laptops running 8.1 home, an Acer 5732Z laptop with 7, and occasionally another Acer 5734Z with Windows 7 both home that only connects occasionally, a Dell desktop with XP home, and 4 cell phones. I have managed to get every computer working with every other computer, except the XP. Now all the other machines can see the XP, and it can see everything else, all shared folders are seen both ways, but clicking on a folder results in "Windows cannot access \\TOWER

You do not have permission to access \\TOWER. Contact your network administrator to request access."

Does anyone have any idea what I might try?

That article is from 2001. I seriously doubt it will help with Windows 8.1.

As far as I understood, the win 8.1 were having trouble connecting to XP machines, because of permissions on that XP machine. Also, I've ran home networks since win XP and honestly nothing much changed in that area except homegroup/media devices additions.

The problem is that 8.1 networking code is vastly different from XP, and while 8.1 is backwards compatible with XP, XP isn't compatible with 8.1. So 8.1 is what needs to be configured properly so XP can connect to it, not the other way around.

Win 8.1 - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/share-files-folders

Or if you do it from the Desktop it is very similar to Win7 .

Networking Win 7 with other version of Windows as Work Network (works very well if all computers are Win 7 too).

In the Network Center, clicking on the Network type opens the window to the right.
Choose your type of Network. Notice the check mark at the bottom, and check/uncheck it according to your needs.

Win 7 - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Networking-home-computers-running-different-versions-of-Windows

Win 7 Work Network specific folder sharing - http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windows7/windows7_sharing.htm

Win XP use the Professional Sharing schekme - http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/index.htm

-------------
If you have Permission and Security issues with Vista/Win7, check the following settings.
Point to the a Folder that meant to to be share. Right click and choose properties.
In the properties
Click on the Security tab shown in the pic bellow to the right) and check that the users and their permission (shown in the pic bellow center and left) are correctly configured.

Then do the same to the Permission tab.

http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/Permission-Security.jpg

In both the Security panel, and the Permission panel you have to highlight each User/Group and examine that the Permission Controls are checked correctly.
When everything is OK, Reboot the Network (Router, and computer).

* Note . The Groups and Users shown in the screen-shoot are just an example. Your list will look the way your system is configured.

**Note . All users that are allowed to share need to have account onall the computers that they are allowed to connect to.

Everyone is an account, it means a group of all of the users that already have an account and been established as users. It is available to avoid the need of configuring permission to each on its own, it does not mean Everyone that feel that they would like to login.

try this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb456988.aspx (set permissions to "everyone" or something similar from "advanced" tab)

Making sure all permissions set was the first thing I did.

Without knowing exactly what you have tried, it's hard to know where to start. Have you gone through this tutorial, and followed every step exactly as described?

All of that was also in the list of the first things I did

OK, that would explain a lot.

That would also explain a lot. And for everything else you posted, I have tried all of that, made sure all the checkmarks were in the right places, click all the "Allow" buttons, all of that.

Like I said, I have tried everything I can think of, I mean I appreciate all the posting's, but so far no one has posted anything I haven't tried already.

Except that it's 8.1 than needs configured, and 'everyone' doesn't mean "everyone", it all registered users. I'm going to try those two things and I'll get back to you.
