being at home for the holidays, i have need of an actual modem in my computer. i have tried two now, and neither has worked. my intial though had been it was the modem, but after receiving a new one today, i have concluded it probably isn't the modems.

modems 3com hardware and rockwell based v.92 software(claims xp pnp)
xp on an ecs K7S5A athlon 1600xp

the problem:
the computer detects a new card, goes through the motions but then stops and prompts me to manually install a driver, in both cases it read it as a default software modem. when i tried to install drivers, it responds with "invalid data".

i tried an alternate approach, and was able to install it as a generic 56k modem, that according to xp was set up and functioning, however when i actually tried to use it, i got no diel tone and it reported as not responding. when i tried quary, it responded that the modem was off or not connected.

i have tried it in all non used pci slots now, with no change.

any suggestions?

If you can identify the actual model # of the modems, it probably wouldn't hurt to go out and search for Windows2000 drivers on the vendor websites; XP drivers would obviously be better, but if you can't find any, Win2k might work. Just make sure you have a restore point made in case something goes horribly wrong :D

unfortunatly, i left the 3com at school, thinking it was the modems fault. anyway, i tried the win2k drivers, and got the same message "data is invalid" when i tried to install. i may have to break down and get an external modem i guess, next time i come home.
