XP and file sharing

When i share a folder in XP and i browse to it from my other computer (also XP Pro) the computer with the shared folder isnt asking for a password. what is the fix for this, its driving me nuts that anyone can get to the shared folders.

I'm no expert but here's how I set mine up.

1. Turn off simple file sharing. (windows explorer>tools>folder options>view>it's the last item in the list)

2. Set passwords for accounts on both machines.

3 If the logged in user accounts on both machines have the same name and password no password will be asked for.

 
alright i set up 2 computers, i turned off simple file sharing, and when i browse to the share i have on the second XP computer its still not asking for a user name and password to see the files, and no im not logged in with the same user/pass on each computer, they dont even have the same accounts set up on them, how do i get XP to require a user/pass like windows 2k does?
 
i guess what im trying to say is, when someone goes to \\mycomputer name or clicks on my computer name in the workgroup why isnt XP prompting them for a user name and a password?
 
In Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional, if working in a workgroup, the Security tab is hidden by default. This behavior occurs because in Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional, guests are forced to log on to a workgroup.


When security settings are set in Windows XP, the following registry key is used:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

The values are:

ForceGuest=1 : Use this value to force guests on

ForceGuest=0 : Use this value to force guests off


Disable the Guest account.

 
Create a New user account on the box where the shares are...

Name it compaq with password dell

Create a New share called hp on your C:\ directory...

Add the New account Compaq to the hp permissions...

Remove Everyone from the hp permissions...

Try to connect from over the network...
 
i believe i fixed it now, i had to actually go into the admin tools and go into the users tool and turn the guest account off there even though it was off in the control panel. ill have to play with it more later, calc and accounting homework, blah
