xp 90 question

Ive been convinved by these forums to return the artic cooling freezer 64 that was recommended by a friend and instead purchase an xp90.

On some forums I read that the recommended fan position is to blow down into the heatsink. Is this correct? Have people done both? I need to know so I can position the fan thats directed at the CPU from the side panel as either exhaust or intake.

Also the consensus seems to be that panaflo is the fan to get for best db/cfm ratio, which model? How many CFM should I be going for?

ive seen both...and i personally would have the fan blowing away from the CPU, so the heat goes out along with it. just my 2 cents.
 
You can mount the fan so that air blows onto the heatsink or draws air from the heatsink. Depending on your case fans, etc., one way may prove to be significantly better at cooling than another. Don't be afraid to experiment for yourself: the fan just clips onto the XP-90 (no screws or adhesive or anything), so it's easy to remove it and remount it if you want.

I use the medium speed Panaflo fan that Thermalright suggests: 48 CFMs at 30 dB's. Seems to be a good balance between cooling and noise for me, but others have had success with the low speed fan (not sure if they--or you--are overclockers).
 
I would just like to say that I accidentally have had my panaflo blowing away from the heatsink for about a year (before I discovered my error while replacing my ram) and besides getting odd accumilation of dust (from turbulance from my side case fan) my cooling performance suffered as well. I switched the fan to blow on the heatsink and overclock went up quite significantly.....

So here is a case in point for you...

On a hot summer day, would you want a fan blowing air onto you or trying to cool you down by sucking air away from you?
 
because of XP90's surface area is so great, it doesnt need a high RPM fan to cool it...something like Panaflow going at 1700RPM will do a great job but have have seen people stuffing a Delta FF onto XP90 and XP120s

Yea, but there's a few differences:
1. The fan is blowing ONTO the heatsink, not on the cpu.
2. The intake and exhaust pushes the air from the cpu out. (assuming you have an adequate case)
3. The cpu is much hotter than the air around us.

Your example is not applicable!!
 
My xp120 is in the mail now... im going to try ducting straight from the side. That way, the heatsink is exposed to plenty of fresh air, (panaflo 120 x 38 "jet turbine") and the heated air goes into the case and out the exhaust. the force of the intake will keep that heated air from lingering near the CPU so it should be effective...
