Crap this thing is huge.

I took the retail CPU cooler off and the thermal paste that monarchcomputer put on their looks suspiciously like AS5. If that's the case I'll just even out the layer and throw the heatsink on their, but if not...

What can I use to get the paste off? I ahve Isopropyl rubbing alcohol right in front of me, but it's only 70%. Is that ok?

I really dont wanna make a run to the store, so any suggestions?

Only use 99% or higher Isopropyl. Your non-fried computer hardware will thank you.

I usually use paper towel to wipe off excess paste, then use a qtip covered in alcohol to remove the last traces from the component.

ok, so where do I get 99%. Grocery store?

Is it possible to just wipe the CPU clean with the paper towel and put AS5 over the tiny bit that would be left, or is that a no-no?

Uh It will evaporate in any case 70% will be a little slower, but just wait. 99% stuff evaporates way too fast lol.

Just as long as you're not sticking it on there in 10 seconds, your stuff wont fry.... Don't make a trip to the grocery store to buy that unless u really need it.

Its more the impurities, not the amount of water...

That being said, I have used 70% alcohol and it has worked fine for me. It may cool slightly worse, but nothing major...

Gasoline has many additives. Most electronic stores should carry 99% alcohol. The +90% stuff at the drug stores are okay, too.

I've used 70% rubbing alcohol many, many times. Works fine.
Nail polish remover also works fine.
