Ive got an hp photosmart 2610 all in one printer. Used to have it directly connected to the xp64 machine (usb) with the rest of the pcs on my network connecting threw it and it worked just fine. Till a month or two back when i had a hard drive failure on it and had to reformat. Now no matter what i do i cant get it to install at all on the xp64 machine. Keeps giving me an error saying im missing some sort of usb driver (which makes no sense, as all the drivers and such on this rig were identicle to the ones that were on here when it was working before the hd died). Switched it to an ethernet connection directly to my switch so that itll work on the other machines on the network, but it still wont install on here. Same usb driver error. This being my newest machine, its killing me not having printer acess.

So, as the title says, looking for a new all in one printer (print/scan/copy, preferrably hp) with a network connection (wired) that wont give me headaches with xp64. Anyone have any suggestions? Price isnt a big issue, though id like to keep it under $200.

So anyone have any ideas on either how to fix this, or for a new printer that wont pitch a fit at xp64?

Thanks.

While using XP 64 is a problem, compatibility issues and all, i don't think thats the reason your having problems. The USB error is just what it says. You need to install the drivers for the USB on the motherboard. So try reinstalling the motherboard drivers.

But do yourself a favor and get Vista 64.

Ive tried reinstalling the drivers for the motherboard (evga 780i) using both the driver cd that came with it and the most recent nforce drivers off the nvidia website. No dice. Besides that ive got several other usb devices connected and not one of them has any issues. Also one of the other pcs on my network is running the same motherboard and chipset drivers and had no issue installing the printer (its on normal xp).

Besides all that why would the software refuse to let me install the printer because of some usb issue when its being connected threw the network and not usb? Always shows it as not being detected (on the few times its let me get that far.. dont always get the same results on trying to install).

*edit*

Also if i try adding the printer threw the control panel rather then use the hp software, nothing gets detected when i tell it to look for a network printer as well.

This is the error that the hp software throws at me when i tried to run the installation.

"This file does not exist and is required for installation to continue. Click continue to proceed at your own risk or ensure the file exists before continuing installation.

File Name: C:\\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\usbhub.sys
Manufacturer: Microsoft
Version: 0.0.0.0"

Also sometimes gives another error about the operating system not being recognized or supported down the line. Though not always.

Also for the hell of it i tried installing the prior set of nforce drivers that was up on the nvidia site in between the driver cds version and the up to date one i was running. Still get the errors.

*edit*

Before you ask, yes there IS a usbhub.sys file in said location. Checked thinking maybe it just wasnt there and i could copy it over from another pc. No such luck. No idea wtf is the problem with this installation software.

It isn't the OS at fault since it worked before.
It definitely sounds like a driver issue/conflict. The only thing I cold suggest would be a clean format, install just the OS and what is needed for the printer to work and see what happens. Then if it works start adding back software and drivers till you encounter something that starts causing problems.

Frequently, HP printer drivers through up red herrings for errors, its very likely to be caused by missing dll's, rewritten dll's, or dll's moved to locations the printer software does not expect. And then the install aborts with either a red herring error or no error code at all. And then HP gives you a bogus error blaming the USB hub at the end of the rainbow.

Hp will offer guaranteed support for like $30 or $40 for off warranty items, but the tech's in India read from scripts and are giant time wasting zombies who will blame windows for all the problems. Your other alternative is to read the HP troubleshooting pages for the printer and hope to stumble on the cause of the problem.

A virgin reinstall of XP may solve the problem as Modelwork points out.

Try this:
Open a command prompt window & type:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 [enter]
start devmgmt.msc [enter]

Device Manager will open.
Click View/Show Hidden Devices
Inside the "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right-click Uninstall every listed device.
Do the same for any listed printers.
Reboot and run the chipset driver installation again.
