I am thinking of upgrading from my xp 3000 333mhz to a 3200 400mhz. The main reason right now is because i cant run my memory at full speed. Its suppose to be pc3200 but i have to run it at pc2700. I'm not expecting a drastic improvement but at least a somewhat moderate size. Would u recomend that i should upgrade?
 
If an extra 2 or 3 fps (if even that much) matters that much to you, then by all means go ahead. Or else, like mike says: WASTE OF MONEY! I really doubt that you would see any noticeable real world performance. I'm running an Athlon XP 2000+ and my friend a Athlon XP 2400+, yes my friend's is faster, but not by much. Barely noticeable to be honest.
 
I say... go up to 3400+ and AMD64 if you're not 64bits yet... and try PCIe. Or go for Intel 915 or 925 chipset boards with PCIe and get a good video card and some DDR2. Probably be paying close to the same price to replace it all.

Should be. All that matters is if your CPU, Mobo, and Memory can do it. Your ram is rated at that speed. Ultra means your board is 400 FSB IIRC, and your cpu mulitplier would need to come down to 10 or so for starters, could maybe jack it up to 10.5 or 11 if your cooling is good. If you can adjust your multipliers (some Bartons are hard-locked, but lower might be available like in A64-I don't know) you'd be in business. That's a pretty standard move with the Socket A setup.

P.S.- Isn't your motherboard a dual-channel one? If so, then you'd probably get better performance by pulling out a stick of ram (I'm assuming you have 3x256) and doubling the memory bus width. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong-I haven't had one of those rigs for a while.

As everyone is telling you, it would not be worth the money to upgrade your 3000/333 to a 3200/400. I doubt that you could even tell the difference if you overclocked the fsb up to 400Mhz. As for the memory, your board should be a dual channel, and removing the third dimm will allow you to run in that mode, but I doubt you would notice anything with this change.

Now if you were to remove the dimm, up the fsb to 400 and make sure your memory timings are as low as possible, you may notice your fps goes up in games, but I still don't think you would notice a difference on your desktop.

I just finished OC'g my sons 2600+ to 2.2Ghz and upgraded the memory to 1GB (512x2) and if when he plays COD, the FPS increased about 5-8fps. Minimal, but that is noticable for him. As for desktop performance, nothing...

The NF7-S will run in Dual Channel with three sticks of ram. I.e., he should NOW be running in DC. Although it is an unbalanced DC configuration, I have seen other post that running unbalanced does not cause performance loss.

In any case, in an AMD XP system, DC equals about a 5% increase over non-DC. It's a P4 system that benefits greatly from DC as that cpu is bandwithd hungry.
