XP 2400+ temps? Please help...

My new XP 2400+ runs at idle around 51C with MB temps at 28-29C. This seems like a bit high to me. I have a relatively good copper HS with 5000RPM fan, meant to run up to 2.4 ghz. Is this temperature OK, or should I reinstall the heatsink (inproper seating?)? The HS itself is merely warm at this temperature, the bottom is a little hotter. I know Summer is rolling around, but I would like to know what good temps would be and if I should feel safe at these temperatures.

Also of note is that Asus Probe reports the VCore as 1.7 while the BIOS reports it as the default 1.65 (the actual monitor reads ~1.7, but the setting is at 1.65v)(I have noticed this on my second computer as well...a .05 v difference). Should I be able to lower the VCore?

Looks a little warm to me. My 2400+ is around 50C at full load with the retail HSF. What software is giving you that temp, and what thermal material are you using. Also, what HSF are you using. Peace.

I got it at CompUSA, it was 20 bucks, and seemed ok for a copper HSF (Got it around January). Asus Probe is giving me these temps, and so do other monitors I have tried. I am using Phase Change Material, as this is what AMD recommends.

If I were to reseat the HSF, would I have to remove all PCM from the processor and then replace it? This is what I am the most afraid of doing, I would rather not have to.

AND, on second inspection, the HS is relatively hot all around. Will these temperatures significantly reduce the life of my CPU/should I be worried?

On a side note, it IS Spring right now, for me typically a transition between cool winter and air-conditioned summer, so around now is the hottest my home gets, around 70-75 degrees F.

It might be necessary to reseat the HSF, and you would need to replace the PCM as it is only good for one use. I'm sure that you're setup is more effective than my retail HSF. Peace.

Yea, I looked it up and this HSF is going at places for 40 bucks. It damn well better work. But, what I mean is, do i Need to remove the present PCM from the CPU or can i just leave it along with the new stuff?

You will need to clean the old stuff off before you apply any new PCM. Use some isopropyl alcohol or acetone. Peace.

Well, I tried running it WITHOUT removing the stuff from the CPU, and temps were in the mid 80's C. Scared the crap outta me. This, of course, was before reading your reply. Well, out to the store for more thermal stuff...If I were to get arctic silver or seomthing like that, what kind of gains could I expect?

5-10C decrease in temp with AS over the PCM perhaps. Your mileage may vary.

I got a new HSF, and problem solved-54C max with prime95. So I'm good for now, especially considering I was getting 65+ before.

I had my XP2400 running stock on an ASUS board. Temps almost never went below 50C no matter what I did. Swapped all the hardware over to an Abit board and the temps show 35C and have never gone over 40C.

I've read that ASUS boards will report as much as 10C more than other boards, I doubt that. The change for me has been 15C at least.

As far as it actually being hot.... I gave it the feel test and it was warm, but not at all hot. Ran perfectly fine. My guess is that my cpu is still running at a temperature similar to what it ran in the ASUS. The question as to which one is right is still up in the air.
