XP: 2 harddrives on 1 ata66 port won't load OS

Hi, just installed WinXP pro.
my motherboard is a ABIT BE6(2x ata66, 2x ata33)

first, i try to connect 2 harddrives on 1 ata66 port, but just before WinXP loads(can't see the logonUI, bootscreen) it just holds there.

if i connect the other drives to ata33, Windows can load again.

now 2 cdroms...

when i was using Win98, i connect 1 harddrive on ata66 and 2 cdroms on the other ata66 port. In WinXP, it won't load.

in brief, more than 1 harddrives on ata66 ports, WinXP couldn't load. any other drives need to be connect to ata33 ports.(cdroms, cdrws, dvdroms, harddrives)

want to know if there is setting problem in WinXP.

i've triple checked the primary and slavery setting. what else do i need to look for?

You say you just installed XP Pro (presumably you finished the install). Were the hard drives connected to the ata33 channel when you installed XP Pro?

If the drives were on the ata33 channel when XP was installed did you additionally install the Highpoint drivers for the ata66 controller? Note: I have previously found mistakes either on the Abit website or manual for which Highpoint chip is on what version of the BE6. I suggest you look at your motherboard yourself to determine wether it is using an HPT366 or HPT370 chip and then download/install the correct driver for that chip from abit.

When you try to connect the hard drives on the ata66 channel are you using the 80 conductor cable? If you are using the 80 conductor cable, is the black connector, connected to the master drive on that cable?

I hope some of this may help.

i installed through the ata33 port.
couldn't install driver at that time.
now i switch back to ata66.

i remember the connector head is blue and grey if i am correct. only 40 conductor cable is black(both heads)
