I just popped my chip in without a problem but the heatsink has me stuck. The instructions say to remove a tape from it but I don't see a tape just a tan color. The fan have a small plastic cover over the underneath part of the fan. So am I correct in assuming that there is no tape and that I should slap that fan in there. Thanx!

Remove the small plastic cover over the underneath part of the fan. If you do not and start your system you could damage your cpu.

Your right Big-No tape-just plastic cover. I personally would scap off tape with a razor and use ActicSilverII instead. CoolerGuys.Com sells it. ASII runs your CPU about 5'F cooler than tape. Just a thought! Good Luck!

That tan stuff is the heat compound. I was miffed by this too and placed the H/S fan on the processor anyway. They must've changed the specs and not the manual right before release.

Go ahead and pop that puppy on, it'll be ok

I just went through the same thing. No tape, just a plastic square protecting the pink/tan sticky stuff.

My MB (Dragon+) came with a little pouch of thermal gunk but I didn't use it. Anyone know if that stuff is any good compared to the often mentioned brand name stuff? FYI my temperatures are about 47 CPU and 43 case (Celsius)

bighurtx82,

Read this document. It will explain a lot, and may save your CPU from inexperienced hands...

edit: Welcome to Anandtech! 😀
