XP 1800+/1900+/2000+ vs. P4 1.6a

I realize there is a thread about the 1.6a's, but everything seems to get lost in there...so here goes. I had the components of the system I want to build pretty much set in stone, until this week. I was going to go with the epox 8kha+ and an athlon xp 1800/1900/2000 (one of these). Now, it seems that everyone and his uncle are overclocking the 1.6a to ungodly speeds. Is it even worth it to buy an XP? I just don't know what to do anymore. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

chec kout this review here, right from anandtech. compares all those processors: link

should help you decide... really up to you though, both are nice set ups right now, i currently have an XP1600 setup, OCed real nice as of tonight, but am thinking about in the near future setting up a 1.6a setup for the fun of it

hope this answers your question

and overclocking a 1.6a involves increasing the fsb, which i dont think is shown in the anandtech review.

i wouldn't mind seeing how my 1.4 athlon/t-bird holds up against either the xp's or northwoods.....i wouldn't expect it to 'win' but i just don't see a need for more speed in my situation just yet...........although i have come close to upgrading just for fun : )

Oh gosh. I know how you feel! I just got done upgrading a T-bird with an XP last week and now the "in" thing is the Northwoods. 🙁 😉 And so a P4 woody + mobo is due to be delivered to me today! :Q

Fortunately, since I run DC projects, either one will help get more results out, so I can somewhat justify the purchase...😛 Plus I'll be selling 2 systems, so that will help. 🙂

I had the same dilema a few month ago trying to decide. I chose the 1.6a with an Intel 845d chipset motherboard that supports DDR. verasy easy to overclock, bumped the FSB up to 140, and it's runs at 2.24 Ghhz with default voltage 1.5v and low idle temp 25~29C and 40C~47C under moderate load. Retail HSF also.

And that will only last a few weeks until the next craze hits. It just never ends. 🙂

I say go AMD if you don't plan to OC much if at all. Go Intel if you do want to push your chip to get a lot of extra MHz for free. Always keep in mind you're in the same performance class either way, one isn't significantly better than the other.
