sheez, I just ordered a t-bred retail for $62 yesterday, which isn't bad, now its up to $65 today and the 1600+ is lower. go figure, maybe they wanna clear all non t-bred out.
still a dam good price on a little beast of a chip. more than adequate for most people.

Wow, 48.99, they're really trying to unload them I guess... can't wait for lower end T-Bred B chips!

What's a good cheap motherboard to use this with? Onboard video would be nice, but isn't absolutely necessary.

How's the biostar M7VIG for overclocking?
A7N266-VM ?
Shuttle AK35GT2 (no on-board video)?
MSI 745 Ultra?
ECS K7S5A?

I picked up some of the $17 PC2100 memory from Staples last weekend, so I'd like to use that.

Also, what heatsink/cooler are you using?

My 1800+ T-Bred can do 2ghz EASY at 1.7v. Thats with a aluminum hsf. I need to get a copper hs or at least a copper insert hs. Best $69 I have spent. From the reviews at newegg.com from others that got the 1800+ they are getting 2ghz easy also.

How's the biostar M7VIG for overclocking?
The M7VIG isn't a good overclocking board. There are no BIOS multiplier adjustments and extremely limited options in terms of FSB.

You might try the M7VIG Pro, though. It seems to be an updated M7VIG with such goodies as USB 2.0 (2 rear, 4 front headers & a front audio header), C-Media CMI9739A 6-Channel AC'97 CODEC, "9th Touch" (which seems to be a boot loader that allows you to pick your boot device without entering the CMOS), and "WarpSpeeder," which seems to be a Windows "control panel features three user-friendly functions including Overclock Manager, Overvoltage Manager, and Hardware Monitor." I have no idea how well the later features work, but WarpSpeeder is supposed to reboot the system to the original settings if you push your over clock too far. The Pro version of the board doesn't seem to be available in standard retail channels quite yet.

Strangely, I don't know how the Asus A7N266-VM overclocks, even though I have one. I guess I haven't mucked with it. Its in the shop now with a dying Seagate 80 gig hard drive, so maybe when the RMA replacement arrives I'll play around with the settings, but it seems like I would have remembered it if there were many options in the BIOS.

The ECS K7S5A is also not a reknown overclocker, having few options in the standard BIOS, though an overclocking BIOS is apparently available (I don't know if it is offered by ECS or not). The board is also picky about RAM and power supply quality.

If I were going to buy this CPU, it would be expressly because I wanted to get an AGOIA chip to overclock at 166 FSB, so I'd look for a cheap, decent motherboard with a 5-1 PCI divider to keep the PCI bus in spec. I think most KT333 or KT400 boards would work if you have good memory? The Biostar M7VIP is only ~$64 delivered, and has 6 channel sound and USB 2.0, but no integrated LAN & it isn't supposed to be a great overclocker. The MSI 6380E KT3 Ultra and EPOX EP-8K3AE are only a few bucks more and come from companies with more of a reputation for overclocking, but they don't seem to have USB 2.0.

Anyone have any suggestions for a cheap stable board that will run this chip at 166 FSB and has USB 2.0, 6 channel sound and onboard LAN?

They are the fastest available Socket A boards, maybe, and good overclockers, but still cost about $110 or so and don't have onboard video yet. I'd happily sacrifice a modest ~5% speed advantage to save $50.

It's already here, Ati calls it the Fusion chipset, and both FIC and Saphire have boards based on it.
The Saphire board goes for $62 at Newegg. Or maybe you meant aForce2 (Fusion2?).

What's so good about this chip? Isn't the 2000+ a better chip? Can get a combo Board + Chip @ frys for 99.00

Certain "steppings" of this processor, in particularly the AGOIA are apparently very easy to overclock by simply running the CPU at 166 MHz front side bus speed instead of the default 133 MHz FSB. At 166 FSB this processor runs at 1743 MHz instead of 1433 MHz, a bit faster than an XP2000+ at default speed. Only modest air cooling is apparently required for this simple overclocking feat, e.g. a quite $6 GC68 fan. Most KT333 or KT400 boards are apparently sufficient, and those boards start at $64 or so (delivered after tax), so when combined with this processor it doesn't total more than the Fry's combo ($117 vs. 108 after tax).

Both of those VIA chipsets are faster than the SiS 735 chipset of the K7S5A that comes with those Fry's combos (as is the KT266A), even if the ECS board is rigged with DDR RAM. Also, the K7S5A is picky about power supplies and memory, which raises the real cost of those combos (though to be fair, you would need decent RAM to overclock the XP1600+ to 166 FSB, say Samsung PC2100). And many KT333 & up boards come with additional features like USB 2.0, 6 channel "hardware" onboard sound, firewire, etc. Plus, a lot of folks report problems with the K7S5A failing over time. Moreover, much of the country simply doesn't live close to a Fry's.
