OK - so given all the recent reviews - the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 is stomping all over the competition at a paltry $26 (AR) on Newegg...

I'm wondering - is the Achilles HDT-S1284 going to be much better? I haven't seen any reviews of the S1284 (Achilles) as of yet....

is it worth the extra $10?

Hi Toadster,

From what I have read so far, the answer is no, it's not worth it. There is supposed to be a "revised" version in the works, but it needs a lot of work.

Even though my little Xiggy SD-964 does ok on my system, I'm jumping on the S1283 deal with the free shipping. I just ordered it about 20 min. ago :). This is a good deal and I don't see any sense in buying an expensive cooler for a socket that's going to be extinct soon. If you need it or want it, grab it before the free shipping and rebate is gone.

Cheers

Toadster, your a poet did you know it? :p

The Xigmatek is a great sink. You cant go wrong with it, unless it doesnt fit.

hmm - the review from benchmarkreviews.com seems a bit rough, complaining about non-direct contact on the Core 2 based CPU's but then again - they say...

Achilles S1284 ConclusionFor the first time in the history of CPU cooler reviews, I have finally found a product package worthy of a perfect 10. Xigmatek touches on our inner Spartan, and delivers a combination of playful artwork with informative statistics on their retain package. More effective than anything, is that for the first time in HDT product history, the base of the cooler with its exposed heat-pipe surface are right at the forefront of attention and kept in clear view. Kudos to Xigmatek for changing the face of product packaging. Believe me, if you saw the Achilles S1284 sitting on a shelf, you couldn't resist the urge to pick it up.

hmm - I wonder if the HDT base is a little larger to fit on a Nehalem CPU? :)

If the base is larger to fit Nehalem, I think it would be a good advertising point. I also guess there would have to be an adapter bracket so it would fit the new/wider socket mounting holes.

....

what sink you have now?

It might not merit an upgrade.

Ballonshark, that requires you snipping the existing pushpins on your sink and using a thermalright bolt though kit as the mount.

using a Zalman 9500CNPS - from reviews I've seen, I'll be saving about 10C in high-end testing...

this is probably my LAST Socket 775 heatsink! EEK!

With the 1283, just how necessary is it to use the bolt through bracket?

The reason I ask is that I am about to build a new system with a Q9450(or Q9550 if Intel lowers the price soon)on an Asus P5Q-E which I would like to moderately OC since it is supposed to be fairly straight forward. In the past I have basically used AMD chips, always used the stock HSF and never overclocked. Thought I would expand my horizons this time! :D

Also, is the thermal grease supplied with the 1283 adequate, or do I need to go ahead and order some AS5 while I am at it? Even though I won't be getting the other components for another couple of weeks or so, it seems like now might be a good time to get the 1283 from Newegg.

The last thing I was wondering is if the 1283 would likely fit into the typical mid-tower case? Right now I am leaning toward the Antec P182 or P182-SE(wife is voting for the SE), but am still considering the Antec 900 or possibly a Lian Li PC-60APlusII.

Thanks,

Zane

1. The bracket is completely optional, it is questionable how much it improves performance. It will save you some trouble though, because those push-pins really are hell to use. Get the Xigmatek kit from Newegg, it works a little better than the Thermalright kit on Xigmatek heatsinks.

2. I used the stock compound, the temps were good. With AS5 probably won't make much of a difference. Just remember to use a lot of thermal paste on HDT heatsinks, not the "one drop" or "one line" approach.

3. It will fit in all those cases.

Ok, here's the Xiggy model. Check the shipping here. For me, it was a little high. They are out of FL.

Toadster, Did your S1283 come with a molex adapter? The instructions seem to indicate that it comes with one, but I didn't get one. Thanks

Thanks for the help, toadeater(what a handle!):D

Guess I'll order the 1283 now and try to find a better deal on the bracket later. I was thinking of combining that with some cable management supplies from some place like performance-pcs.com. Shipping is getting to be a significant consideration these days!

I know I'm not the brightest light bulb in the house, but I can't seem to figure out what to do with the aluminum deflector that comes with the 1283. I read the directions, such as they are, and they don't appear to make sense because when I insert the deflector between the fins it will only stay put if I put it in upside down! In other words, instead of deflecting air coming through the fins down onto the motherboard, it looks to me like it will be deflecting the air up and away from the motherboard.

If I position the deflector so that it is turned down, it will not "attach"; it just slides around completely loose. If I position the deflector so that it is turned up, the "protruding points" between the fins pop into the two little holes on the deflector and it seems to be attached as it was designed.

What am I missing?

Thanks to both of you for your confirmation! I sorta wanted the adapter so I could use the fan later as a case fan if and when I get two push/pull fans for the S1283.

In reference to my post above, which way is the aluminum deflector supposed to mount onto the S1283? Is is supposed to be deflecting air, after passing through the fins, down onto the motherboard or up and away from the motherboard?

Mine appears to attach with it turned up, deflecting air away from the motherboard....which doesn't seem right to me.

Is this deflector really even necessary?

Thanks,

Zane

It should be facing down like in this pic. http://www.xigmatek.com/product/air-hdts1283.php

I didn't even mess with mine as I'm not comfortable with a piece of conductive metal that may fit loosely in the heatsink and fall on other components causing a short circuit. That's just my opinion.

It's really not necessary to cool components on the motherboard unless your overclocking heavily and then there are other more effective means such as bigger chip heatsinks and fans. I have a Q6600 2.4GHz OC'd to 3GHz with no motherboard cooling.

Thanks... that's what I thought. There is something "backwards" with mine. It will not "snap" into place when facing down, but does when it's facing up.

That's what I will do, too.

Thanks for the help.
